Poll reports drinking in U.S. at record low

Direct tax; sure.
Cigarette smoking carries a substantial economic burden, impacting not only individual smokers but also healthcare systems, businesses, and society as a whole.

Society pays. A lot.

Ahhhh….

How about the lovely and totally healthy weed smokers ?

Make them pay as much… No make that MORE than cigarette smokers…

Because weed is the scary new BIG TOBACCO….

I am not one to justify one problem for another. There are numerous vices that are a huge cost to society. Smoking is a bad one.

Almost mid 40's here, and I don't really drink anymore , I might have one or two drinks a year if that, I probably didnt drink at all during my 30's, I didnt even drink on my wedding day( nor did my wife) I spent a good part of my 20's drinking and that lead to me not wanting to drink anymore. I can't remember the last time I was in actual stand alone bar, its been at least 15 years.

Just for the sake of context: I drink because I enjoy it, not to get drunk. And there is a lot to enjoy. Many of the comments and attitudes expressed in this thread are hugging the notion that a drinker is someone in a toga at a fraternity party or a flat-out alcoholic.

That's true, for many behaviors, including poor drivers, but a different discussion, outside of the context of the OP's response.

We, as humans, are imperfect beings, and despite being the smartest animals, that will not ensure our fate will not meet an end at some point, including as a species.

Actually I was replying to your post about smoking, not the OP, but spot on regarding other behaviors.

You are right; everything has a life cycle. Current thought is the Universe is about 13.8B years old; as homo sapiens we've only been here about 300K years.

I was reading about researchers at the University of Georgia who recently analyzed a meteorite that crashed through a Georgia home's roof and found it to be about 20 million years older than our Earth. This particular meteorite, named the McDonough meteorite, is estimated to have formed 4.56 billion years ago, while Earth is believed to be 4.54 billion years old.

Fascinating stuff, IMO.

A tangent ...

We had a student teacher in Grade 8 science, a rather eccentric middle-aged research scientist from the U.K., quite different from the typical student teacher.

He asked the class how old we thought the Earth was. As a space nerd, I threw up my hand and blurted out "4.6 billion years!"

He liked this answer.

A few (30 or so) years later, I recalled this, and thought "Gee, and now I would have to update my answer. Oh, wait ... not even a rounding error ..."

Many don’t want to be chained to responsibilities and stress.

Lots of young adults see their parents either divorced or stuck in loveless unhappy dysfunctional marriage.
Interestingly rates of depression, and other mental illnesses are very high among young millennials and gen z. Turns out being "chained to responsibility and stress" is vital to being happy. If you are responsible for nothing, and stress free you are useless and being useless makes people depressed.

I hate to be the these kids are so dumb guy, but they really are in this case. Also the whole I have to go to college scam my peers were dumb enough to fall for. Yes I am in college now but I am working toward becoming a medical doctor which is very different from getting a degree in art history pr something stupid.

I’m 31 with 4 boys 9-2 currently and a very loving wife who gets to be a SAHM. Haven’t touched alcohol in 5 years. The guys at work cannot wrap their minds around it lol
Im 35 wife is a stay at home mom I have 2 sons one special needs, and I am in premed right now. I work 50 plus hours a week. I haven't drank in a decade. Maybe thats the secret I am saving what little brains I do have haha.

My espresso shots and Cappuccino w/1 sugar is far healthier IMO than 1 beer with dinner night after night IMO

Frappuccino would be outlawed in my America 🙄

I've met people who's "dinner" was pack of Marlboro Reds 🚬 and an 8 pack of Budweiser 🤮

While I have several vices in this life, I'm glad alcohol is not one of them
My family was never a major consumer of alcohol, I eventually graduated to a glass of champagne 🍾 on New Years 🤷‍♂️

With how many people I've had to restrain, Ubers home to order and pay for, and keys I've had to rip out of people's hands, you won't catch me drinking heavy, it's too expensive and I don't much care for the taste

Drinking alcohol is not required to socialize. If you feel that it is you either have insecurity issues, or you need to find a new group to socialize with, or both.
100% - one of our engineers does not drink - never did - but he’s practically our social director organizing get togethers etc - and will pick up the tab when others have had a couple drinks - he’s just a people guy and that’s what it takes …
