Poll reports drinking in U.S. at record low

My pancreatitis won’t allow me to drink. But I do slip in a ultra light on rare occasion. Don’t miss it. Never heard my son or his friends ever mention drinking, granted their all under 20. They’re too busy playing games. I will say though those that are older than me typically are the drinkers. Hard to find buddies for a float trip that doesn’t.

I'm sure because it reduces their legal exposure.

That's probably their primary motivation, and only practical effect.

Access to alcohol was never a problem when I was in school, and I doubt things have changed. They did card at the campus bar, but once inside the meal card was accepted as a form of payment!

Alcohol and drugs are intertwined with human history, and the cultures that make them taboo, rather than pragmatically acknowledging their usage make things harder for themselves.

Drinking was never made a "big deal" in my childhood and I never really developed a taste for it. Ultimately, for most people who don't suffer from an associated medical condition, it's more a matter of personal discretion and comportment.

I’m 31 with 4 boys 9-2 currently and a very loving wife who gets to be a SAHM. Haven’t touched alcohol in 5 years. The guys at work cannot wrap their minds around it lol
Around what? That you haven't touched alcohol in 5 years or that your household has a stay at home mom?? ;) I had three instances this week of work interactions that were"adjusted to" due to day care issues. In one case the person showed up and left the kids in the car watching videos.

I don't envy today's young married people. Kids dropped off at daycare and several complain to me about being too exhausted in the evening to deal with everything. Kudos to you Skippy722.

Both honestly! People are floored that I, with nothing more than a high school diploma and some experience to my name, can manage all that in this day and age. But I do enjoy being a machinist 😜

Being passionate about your career puts you way ahead of the game - the reason I choose to continue my career at age 69. You just need to dig a little bit deeper and put more effort into developing at least one bad habit. Otherwise you will not gain the capability to empathize with the rest of us idiots.

Nicotine and Caffeine, the staples of a healthy balanced breakfast 😉

I do have a reusable pod based vape that uses cotton wicks and I use Made in USA juice instead of the chemical laced plastic foam concoction disposable vapes use 😅

I read this new Gallop poll that shows the percentage of Americans who report drinking alcohol is at a record low as beliefs about the healthfulness of alcohol have changed. Interestingly, the biggest changes have occurred in younger people and the changes have been rapid the past few years.

Do you all think this is a trend that will continue or is this a statistical blip.

I would want to look at their methodology closely before putting too much stock in it.

When I was in my teens and into college, I almost never drank and never smoked anything. I was playing sports at that time and training six days a week so to go get blasted, high, etc. struck me as counterproductive and idiotic.

Thirty years later I am still an active person, no meds needed, no real health problems, and my biggest sources of recreation are walking my dogs and riding and otherwise taking care of the horses and the farm. We also cook our own meals and stay away from processed foods. However, I enjoy a good quality glass of wine from time to time and my summer vacation / weekend cocktail is a gin and tonic with diet tonic, fresh limes, mostly ice and small splash of Bombay sapphire. I enjoy the flavor and sitting with my wife on the deck. The drinks are mostly ice and water but the gin adds a bit of flavor. If this is going to kill me, then so be it. Those who want to lecture about anything, including alcohol, I would ask you is your weight within range? How is your upper and lower body strength? Core strength and flexibility? How active are you? Can you go up several flights of stairs and carry on a conversation?

The Europeans have a better sense of how to enjoy meals and alcohol than we do here in the U.S. you will see that people there regularly have moderate amounts of alcohol but their weight is normal, they are more physically active, and they have less health issues overall, even with a higher smoking rate.

All a long way of saying I would not read too much into polls. Health factors are highly individualized.

Also never marrying, procreating, working or any of those other boring and restrictive things. Who says making TikTok dance videos isn't a productive activity.

Many don’t want to be chained to responsibilities and stress.

Lots of young adults see their parents either divorced or stuck in loveless unhappy dysfunctional marriage.

My only drinking of alcohol these days is one Margarita
with my Taco's and Enchilada's at Jose Peppers. I'm such a lightweight these days. Plus it is only $5 and it is good for a promo Margy

Good marriage here, but I could see that. Also, when I think about the stress of saving for retirement, and paying for college, and a mortgage, and how all I do seems to be spending money, what comes in goes right out... makes me wonder, maybe Jack Reacher was onto something.

They're not drinking. They're not having sex. They have an obesity crisis and a loneliness crisis. Fat chance they'll have a job with artificial intelligence about to drop a bomb on the economy. (All technological advances produce job creation and job destruction. We know where the job destruction will occur, but nobody is sure about the job creation.) Most of the posts in this thread are indeed relevant. It's the big picture and the small picture. However, I would argue with the gentleman who stated that people want less "fog." The opposite is true. They want more fog, more distraction, more mindlessness. Cannabis, Starbucks, endless scrolling, AI instead of thinking for yourself. Nobody wants to face reality, because the reality is that the war is over, and the people lost.

Now, about that not drinking thing. Does that mean the price of my favorite whiskey is going to come down?

I think that's true. 95% of the people I interact with that are my age still enjoy wine and cocktails. The 20-somethings seem to be way more focused on THC stuff.

The stiffest stuff I drink is Coke imported from Mexico. It's got sugar instead of corn syrup.

There's not much different about it. Acid-catalyzed sucrose hydrolysis turns it quickly into 50/50 fructose/glucose sugars. It's pretty similar to American-standard HFCS which is 55/42/3 fructose/glucose/other sugars. HFCS with the same caloric content should taste slightly sweeter and has a "sticky" feel - mostly from small amounts of maltose.

Most Coke sold in Mexico uses HFCS. Some even has sucralose depending on the bottler. What we see in the US is an export product officially imported by Coca-Cola.
