My truck is getting a new Magnaflow high flow cat. I havn't miked it and don't have access to one. I suspect the size is 2"

My truck is equipped with a 2.5L 4banger and 2wd. Anyone have an idea how big the piping is? Thanks,,,op

Oilpan, It's probably a 2" I.D. pipe size. You can get a pretty good measurement by placing a ruler up to the pipe, and eyeballing it (looking straight on). If it's a 2" pipe, the outside diameter will be 2.25".

Thanks guys,

I measured and my exhaust is weird. Going into the cat from the head pipe is 2" it then exits the cat bumped up to 2.5" then after the cat it clamps to again smaller 2" pipe into the muffler.

I have some ideas I was brainstorming.

Idea 1: Since I have 2" pipe that goes into the muffler after the cat alittle ways, I don't think I could get the full benefit from a performance cat. So instead a cheap universal would do the trick.

Idea 2: Cut the existing cat off, run a magnaflow and instead of sticking with the stock piping, upgrade to 2.5" all the way but still keep a quiet muffler so the truck doesn't sound like a swarm of bumble bees.

If your not following me, I understand. I can take some pics if you would like and post them. Thanks,,,,,op

Here's some pics of my exhaust. Hopefully these pics will help you all understand my ideas better.

I have another question.

If you have 2 of the same brand of cats. The only difference is size. One cat is longer than the other. Which cat would allow more airflow? you would think the smaller one?? Thanks,,,op

go to walkerexhaust.com they have diagrams of most vehicles and if you look closely the clamp size is your pipe size. I think you want outer diameter of the pipe since most slip fit stuff is expanded so your outer diameter is its inner diameter.

Looks like they make that cat "one size fits a few".

I doubt that your 4 banger will tax either cat (the short or the long). Without knowing the internals of the cat ..I too would say the shorter one for a preference.

I've decided on Magnaflow direct fit high flow cat. It will save me all this hassle and I think the truck will appreciate it so it stays running good for a long time and get some more oomph out of it maybe. Thanks,,,,op

Good choice on the high-flow cat, OP. One thing to keep in mind, is that a large tailpipe really isn't needed. As the exhaust gases go through the cat and muffler they cool and contract, and lose volume. The 2" pipe is fine, as it will keep the exhaust gas velocity up, along with the torque.

After the hi-flow cat installation, the biggest restriction will be the stock muffler.

Actually, the temperature across the cat will increase substantially. For a 4 cyl Ranger, you will be fine with 2.25. Crush bending, (as nearly all muffler shops use) will decrease the internal diameter of the pipe when bending, so give yourself some "breathing room", so stay away from 2" or smaller. Now, if you get the mandrel bent system from Magnaflow, (http://www.thepartsbin.com/sitemap/ford~exhaust_system~parts.html) a 2" is fine. Actually, that 115.00 price is pretty good, but I hate doing exhaust. That is just one of those things that the shops can do better than the average Joe, with their lifts and torches.
