Pics of Very Old Atlas Filter (1950's?)

Yep, that is a Corvair filter. The design is different with the bolt where other filters have the return flow, so there are two rows of holes.

This is the adapter on the block. Also holds the alternator and fuel pump once assembled.

The inside looks something like this

Here is an adapter that can be bolted on, allowing the use of more common filters.

Well, I wound up having a bunch of these and there was one that was kinda grungy, so I decided to sacrifice it and open it up. The corrosion actually looked worse once inside, but amazingly the media still was pliable and soft, not brittle.

I was a bit surprised that a 50+ year old oil filter looked as close to a modern design as this one did. The pleated media with a metal clip on the seam looks typical, as does the metal base plate on the bottom.

What is interesting is the other "end plate". It appears to be some type of molded material that was apparently poured and then allowed to cure with the pleated media stuck in it. While this looks similar to what we'd see now, I think we would normally see a (preferably) metal end plate holding it all together. In this filter, this material *IS* the other end-plate.

Here you go....

I don't see a separate ADBV. Maybe there is metal underneath and top is just rubber coated to seal the end plate against the threaded base?

I don't think it has any kind of ADBV. You can see the ring imprint in the rubber that sealed the base of media cartridge to the metal base. The threaded center hole is not where the oil flow ... but rather the 3 small holes around the center threaded hole.

When was the first ADBV even invented and used? Trivia question for the fanatics.

Yeah this filter doesn't have an ADBV. I meant it doesn't have a separate seal to seal the end plate to the threaded plate. It has to have a seal there, so I was wondering if the media end cap might not just be rubber coated metal.

Yeah, that's what I was trying to say above. Look closely at the rubber end ... see the imprint of the ridge (between inlet holes and outlet holes) in the metal base in the rubber? That's the seal between inlet and outlet on the metal base.

The center threaded hole in the base it just to hold the filter on the engine ... it does not flow any oil through the big center hole.

I worked in a Chevron station in the late '60s/early 70s. This brings back lots of memories. Thanks, miraCRD, for an interesting gearhead trip down memory lane.

I'll bet that early spin ons that needed anti drainback valves had them. In the case of the Corvair, the filter is mounted vertically so one probably wasn't needed.
