Any recommendations on the oil for it? I normally use Penzoil Ultra on my cars and this one comes with 3 years of free maintenance. Should I just let the dealer do it every 10k? Little bothered about every 10k on whatever oil they use though.

Let me know your experience and thoughts on this and this engine. My first VW as I always had Nissans.

Thanks!

Nice car. Good Luck with it.
I'd probably do a first OCI at 5K. and then follow VW's recommendations.

I'm not sure if PU meets VW's specs but M1 and Castrol (Syntec) have some oils that do.

10k on a Golf, sure. On a GTI, depends. I'd never, ever run a turbo car out that long, unless I was using a good oil, and backed up by UOA.

I have no idea what the VW dealers use, so who's to say it's not possible.

They use bulk oil...no way they pay for the good stuff while they're giving all these people free oil changes. I would change it out at 4k, let it go 6k and then bring it to the dealer. Leave whatever they put in for 4k, yours for 6k, rinse, repeat. I would bring it to them every 10k if for no other reason than for backup if you need warranty work (and it's a VW, so you will

)

And the filter on that car is accessible from inside the hood, so changes will be cake for you.

I own a 2010 GTI. Are you buying it or leasing it? If you are leasing it. I would just go in every 10K at the dealer. The dealer uses Castrol Syntec 5W-40. It's a average oil at best. It meets the VW 502 spec, but only meets the outdated BMW LL-98 and MB 229.1 specs.

I drive 90% city. So I do 6 month OCI's. I been using non VW spec Redline 5W-40. It's one of the only oils that stays in grade and holds its flashpoint with the fuel dilution we see with the direct injection engine.

No they don't. All VWs have no-cost maintenance. Dealer is going to use the Castrol SLX or whatever the OEM fill is. My brother's 2010 Jetta got Castrol while it was in at 10k...says right on his service receipt.

Incorrect. Most, if not all US VW dealers us Castrol Syntec 5w40 for their gassers, turbo or not. In the TDI diesels, they use Castrol SLX 5w30.

By the way, Syntec 5w40 is pretty darn good oil. If you doubt, then study the dozens of UOA's that have been turned in by all the Audi and VW owners over the past ten years....from the 1.8 to the 2.0 Turbos. There are several that have 10K OCI's that are pretty darn good. Is 5w40 the best?????....I don't think so, but it doesn't deserve to be slammed. For goodness sake, it holds the 502 specs.

I am choosing to apply a 5k OCI on my 2.0T. The dealer is doing the free changes at the 10k interval and is using Syntec 5w40. I am doing my own changes, in between at the 5k mark and so far, I have been using GC.

Due to the Black Friday sales, I ended up with 4 cases of Mobil 1 0w40 and it will be the oil I use for a while....a least three changes (my son's Rabbit gets the other 3).

The bottom line, if you are serious about your warranty, stick with a 502 spec oil and stick with 5w40, per your manual. As long as the oil carries a 502 spec, I am comfortable using it....while on warranty.

Once out of warranty, I think I am moving to Rotella T6, 5w40.

Whatever you choose to do I would advise not to go more than 4K on the first 2-3 oil changes to flush the engine. Do not do any UOA's for those first 2-3 changes because they will show high wear. After that do what you feel is best. I would use the free changes then and do a UOA or two to see how the oil is holding up. If you do your own OC's and keep every receipt and a log of what you did. Buy the oil the day you change it, unfortunately you can't stock up. Great car! Happy driving!

I agree in early changes. I did my first change at 1,000 miles and then at 5k miles and then let the dealer do it at 10k miles.

No reason or need to log or document any of your changes. Matter of fact, I advise against it. The only documentation you need is the dealer stamp and documentation at 10k, 20k, and 30k.....then you can start documenting. Don't muddy the water with your own documentation prior to 40k miles.

Honestly, even if I do 5k OCI's.....I am only documenting the changes every 10k miles. Only document what the manufacturer requires and make sure you are using what they demand. Deviations will be disastrous if you need warranty work.

As I stated above, once you are out of warranty....do whatever floats your boat and document if it makes you feel better.

I work at a VW dealership, and I can tell you outright that we most certainly use Castrol Syntec 5w-40 full synthetic oil for all of the maintenance-free oil changes (unless of course it's a diesel, then we use the gold bottle SLX [aka LL03]). Myself personally, I would do one every 5k miles - it's what we write on customer's oil change stickers as well. Anything above 5k personally seems a bit much for a turbocharged model, considering the stress that may be put on the oil from hard acceleration and temps from the turbo. Just my personal opinions though...

If your dealer uses Syntec 5w-40, maybe use Rotella T 5w-40 for inbetween changes. It has a similar additive pack.

Better to be safe than sorry.

Purchasing it, no lease.

As indicated here, I can also confirm that the dealer bulk is indeed Castrol 5W-40 as I've been in the service bays and have seen that written on the drum of the largest volume VW dealer here.

But if you wanted to use Ultra in between your free changes, you could use this:

But ordering online, it wouldn't be your cheapest option.
