doitmyself, I'm already old, 55.

Bottom_feeder, I can rule out hyperthyroid.... He's 28lbs. Down from 30 lbs @ check-up last year. He was ferel maybe 1 yr old when we adopted him as a stray. Vet said that likely imprinted him psychologically to hoard food. I feed just over a cup volume a day. Vet also said he's got some Main Coon in him, so that also explains some of the size.

That's not so bad. My guy does it once in a while, usually if he overeats. If I'm gone for an extended period, like a long weekend, he'll stop eating, and there will be a bowl of uneaten food. Then he'll gorge himself and make a mess. It's very rarely hairballs; that's maybe once a year. The other thing that seems to trigger overeating (or eating too fast) for him is letting his dish run out, then giving him food and he'll go hard on it again. Normally, he'll just eat small portions throughout the day and it's no problem.

Sorry, I wasn't saying that was a possibility in your case, only my recent experience with cat puke.
