As I was cruising through the manual for my Nissan, I was looking for information on the diff oil specs and happened to notice something I had overlooked before I believe.

In the spec that show recommended motor oil for ambient temperature ranges, it also lists 10W-40 as one of the oils that may be used, albeit in the same temp range as 10w30. I found this interesting (probably not so much to the experts here) because I wondered what would be the pros to switching to a heavier oil. The first things I thought of were a pro and a con:

Pro: quieter operation/ perhaps more film strength (?)
Con: decrease in fuel economy possibly

This also let me to wonder if I could get better use out of a 0W-40, say such as M1's? I do not know

What say you all about the use of a 40 weight oil for an egine that says it's ok, but prefers a 30 weight according to the manufacturer? I definitely would not use a 40 down here in the summer unless it was a OW-40.

Have no fear running a 40 weight down here unless you plan on driving some place colder. Lots of us run 10w40, 15w40 and 20w50 with no problems.

?

Sorry, I looked again at my post, and I guess I meant for the winter. Not that it gets super cold down here, but I guess I'd feel more comfortable with a 0W-40 or something like a OW-30/5w30 for winter, in the few occasions like now where it is pretty cold for Texas.

The gentleman who indicated it wouldn't be a problem, is that year round?

I guess the only way to find out would be to run it, but figured I'd seek some input from those on here who might have more experience running "thicker" oils in warmer climates.

Does anyone ever think this forum will discuss 0W-0?

It seems like that is the nexus.

Nope, 0 wouldn't be a good thing for an engine, assuming the actual viscosity steps from 20 to 10 and 10 to 0 are the same as the existing steps between viscosity numbers.

0W will eventually not be the best winter oil. Question is, what will they call the new better winter viscosity.

-5W or 00W or ??

It's too bad we have this goof ball SAE viscosity scheme instead of one that uses real viscosity numbers like ISO does.

My preference would be one that uses the low temperature cranking temperature in degrees Celsius for the left number and the median viscosity of a narrow range of viscosities in cSt for the 100C number.

The right hand number scheme is what ISO does now except the ISO number references 40C.

With global warming upon us why would any one care? I welcome global warming because I can just buy one straight weight oil for all of my vehicles.

Global warming causes it to get cold, not hot. Think Ice age. Melts the ice cap, breaks into water cools ocean, goes into gulf stream, cools temp, BAM, ice age. Wacky , huh. Almost like a cycle. Seems natural enough to me. So why does everyone get so worked up.

You better watch the news again. Global "warming" means the earth is getting warmer. Not that I need it to get any warmner here in Arizona.

The pour point and cranking viscosities of some 10w40's are actually better than some 10w30's.

Having said that, Nissans seem to do very well in the UOA's on 10w30.

Con: decrease in fuel economy possibly

When I changed from 10W30 to 15W50,I saw no decrease in gas mileage.

Global warming is a cycle so eventually it would get cooler again and balance out.

yeah, that's what I thought global "warming" meant..getting warm not global "cooling"

My usual reply is if you think you are the problem leave the earth.
