Ever pull up to one where all the pumps have cars at them, but not a person in site? They're all inside shooting the Shhh because they have nothing better to do.

I've noticed the same thing and really don't understand it. A few of our gas stations in town have a lot of drug dealing going on in their parking lots but it seems like most just have seedy people hanging out for no apparent reason.

I guess I just don't see the appeal of chain smoking and drinking a 40 in a parking lot.

That essentially happened to several of our work vehicles. Somebody stole the license plates off of about a dozen vehicles last year in our parking lot.

Here in TX, we are within our rights to use deadly force to protect property---day or night. so this individual would have been risking a bullet or baseball bat treatment for less than $20. Even if it was 5 bucks, it is still stealing. Nowadays, people have the "oh well, it happens.....it's only 5 bucks etc, etc." attitude, which is basically accepting it. And, if this person was bold enough to do this in a well-populated area, then it's probably not his first time and won't be his last time.

The use of deadly force to protect property is only justified after dark. Check the Texas Penal Code before you shoot or make a statement like this.

I have a CCW permit, carry almost all of the time, and have run crack heads off of my property and would not hesitate to double tap an intruder in my home; if a criminal is in my home, he will be shot dead on the spot. I would have no problem confronting someone committing a property crime, or defending myself or others if the criminal became violent; however, I can't imagine shooting somebody or bludgeoning someone to death over a windshield wiper.

It's been many years but I saw enough death when I was in the Army and still think about it. It's not something I care to repeat over a replaceable car part.

FWIW, NYC has one of the lowest car-theft rates in the country compared to other cities, but the peceptions from the Koch/Dinkin's era just won't die. (or people just get off on bashing New York)

I asked the people at the pumps, they all kinda shrugged and went in that I don't care what, I dunno... I HATE people. /end rant

+1

For 10 years I was parked during the overnight hours on West 92ND Street in NYC...Nobody broke into the car but the bumpers got battered often...For a couple of years I was parked on West 55TH Street and had the same experience...Though people who left their wipers dangling so it would not freeze on the windsheild would often find them missing.

Overall I think NYC is a awesome place to live...The mass transit is awesome and on time the bulk of the time and you really do not need a car to get around...I needed the car to get to upstate New York everyday but once I got back home I would not use it to get around the city for the most part...Most times I just walked.

BTW I did like Mayor Koch alot and went to some of his speeches at NYU downtown...I thought he was awesome...Dinkin's is another story.

I liked NYC alot more then Miami and anywhere else I have been...I did not not have family here I would be in Manahtten or Queens.

Didn't mean to hijack the thread but every so often I hear people bashing NYC when it has so much to offer.

Koch was one of the best (if not the best) mayors in my lifetime.
Dinkins was the worst mayor in my lifetime. His 'empathy' for the criminal element made NYC dangerous and unpleasant for those of us who lived and/or worked there.

PS: When I retire (soon) I'm leaving NY for someplace with lower taxes and a 2 party political system.

you are correct in that deadly force to protect removable property isn't legal during daylight ( i can admit I was wrong), but intruding on habitation is different -no mention of day or night, and the 2007 law "loosened" the requirements for justification---no duty to retreat and there is also protection from civil liability.... you have to admit that you would have to be a real idiot to break into someone's car or home in TX.

When I was younger in the 90's, I was with my parents and went to a supermarket/open market called Corraddo's. My dad had a Pontiac Station Wagon at the time and when we had come out, someone stole his center caps off the rims.

Really Center Caps off an 80's wagon? These people don't care. My biggest pet peeve is when people steal the air cap's off my cars. I come out and am missing 2 or three. I end up buying more at the junkyard for less than 25 cents for 30 of em.

I have only ever been into NYC behind the wheel of a semi... where the city offered me up plenty of grief.

I was always glad when I could look in my rear views to see NYC fading into the background.

But that was all from a different perspective than most experience.

You are correct regarding home intrusion and the use of deadly force, day or night. This is different than shooting someone breaking into your car outside of the house.

I do not always shoot; but when I do, I prefer not to miss a mark.

I totally agree with your view on this. The thing is that usually such a intruder if eliminated during such a break in will never be able to do such a thing again not to mention that he will never be a potential threat to anyone else either. If that intruder is let go or released from prison you can bet that he is almost certain to commit such a crime again in short order.

Hopefully Texas will once again loosen that law to protection of personal property to daylight hours awa well.

This is what happens in Detroit today, as it has for decades!
The ones with a bit of money have been long gone...

Not so much in the burbs, and even with the ecomony being as bad as it is here, people haven't gone crazy. (yet).

Granted, if almost all my family was not here, I'd be gone.
