When I lived in New York (I escaped when I was 21 via the US Navy), I saw vehicles that were broken down on the Long Island Expressway, being stripped of everything possible (tires, battery etc.)

Once in Manhatten , I viewed a parked vehicle being broken into while people just slowly walked by and gauked...

Thats New York baby...I'm glad I escaped and lived on the West Coast for the rest of my life..........

You probably remember the CBE as well, it was probably at its worst a decade or so ago...That can be a scary ride if you have to do it at night and you have the misfortune of breaking down there !!!!

That happened to me. About that many years ago. At 3am on a Sunday night.

I ended up sleeping in my car until help arrived the next morning.

Some people up in these parts lift their wipers up and away from the windshield overnight.

The blades hang out there like beacons... just daring those bold enough to walk over and break them off.

I understanding the reasoning behind doing this... but I don't do that with my own vehicles out of fear of attracting unwanted attention.

I've seen this practice many times. What is it supposed to to do? Relieve the tension on the rubber so it will last longer?

So it wont freeze to the windshield. Another problem with this is I have seen blades that are allowed to snap down spider windshields. Someone could do this intentionally.

I have heard of that idea and I have never done it and my wipers have never frozen to my windshield.

The freezing wiper blades to the windshield is a common occurrence in New England. If you try to force them the squeegee part rips.

Smart move! I only wish I could get the [censored] out of here too! My son, God Bless him, left via the Navy when he was 19. Once he got a taste of how cheap things like insurance, the cost of living, etc, etc, etc, is out of NY [Long Island] he won't be coming back either.

Back on topic, breaking into houses, and cars is common here. So stolen wiper blades doesn't surprise me at all!

so are New Yorkers into to blade swiping, they must b board with their laptops,,does NY have chain gangs, we do in the south.

There have always been jerks and I'm not convinced it's any worse now than it was 30 or 40 years ago. I just think we tend to look at the past through rose colored glasses. I don't there's ever been some wonderful time in our history where everyone was polite and respectful. People might have been superficially nicer but there's always been a lot of nastiness and hostility under the surface.

It seems like about 20% of our society has the a-hole gene and they just routinely find new ways to make our lives miserable.

OPs car probably looks like some high school "enemy" of the thief. When they get to school on Monday thief will say "hahahaha hows your cavalier" and the guy will be

I bought a used car where the previous owner kept the blades between when I paid for it and when I came back to pick it up.

If one is so broke they cannot afford new ones (here I go trying to "justify" something) they can go through the trash can in front of autozone and find blades that aren't too bad. You know, from a yuppie that tears one but buys two so they match.

I avoid going "into" gas stations at all cost.

Pay at the pump, and get the heck out of there.

Deadbeats like to hang out at gas stations for some reason.

Ever pull up to one where all the pumps have cars at them, but not a person in site? They're all inside shooting the Shhh because they have nothing better to do.

They're scratching off lottery tickets at the cash register.. or just turned in a $10 winner that they're converting into ten more scratchoffs: Oh, lessee, gimme two big games, a high/low poker, a buck stops here, a 50/50, and three powerballs.

I asked the people at the pumps, they all kinda shrugged and went in that I don't care what, I dunno... I HATE people. /end rant

I know right? people in the North East have built up such a "proverbial" wall. It`s really quite disgusting. Kind of like,if someone hit your car, nobody would see/know anything. But God forbid YOU hit someone`s car,and their will be 10 witness`s!

I came out of work once and found someone had cut off the part of my license plate with the validation sticker! I guess that's why the sticker now includes the license plate number.

Yes there have always been idiots, but I feel like American society is more and more people with a "gimme gimme" attitude that just want to take and steal and to heck with everyone else.
