I have a VW Passat 1.8T and using Valvoline Synpower 5W-40 but I'm looking into a few options. I know Pentosin is German and Motul is French? Does anyone have any input on these oils - I know they are not as popular here but in terms of quality how do they compare?

Pentosin is a main supplier of fluids to most or all German carmakers. I'd use Pentosynth 5W-40 without having second thoughts. You maybe also look into Lubro Moly 5W-40 as a possibly less expensive alternative.
Don't know much about Motul, but their rep is very good.

I'm currently doing a run of Pentosynth 5W-40. I'm about 3,500 miles into a 5,000 mile run so I should have a UOA posted by mid September. This is in an '03 Passat with the 1.8T engine.

Same car^^^ as you so keep me posted please!!!

I have no problems, just thinking of using it that's all - no biggie if I don't.

I used to use Synpower until I realized it was group III. I'm sure the Motul and Pentosin are good oils, but for me I use Mobil 1 Ow-40 becuase it's a lot easier to get a hold of than the others for me. Sometimes things get to be more hassle than they're worth.
