I think the most fascinating part is the air/oil separator, never knew they used a "centrifuge" type of setup. For owners of this engine... does it work? Has anyone noticed oily intake tracts due to crankcase oil mist routed back to the intake? I know a lot of engines these days that seem to have issues with ingesting quite a bit of oil through the pcv/orifice system. GM has more than a few culprits I am very familiar with.

Thanks for sharing, that's a nice find!

My dad's 2012 with 300K on the clock and still going. No oil consumption, oily intake when we had it apart to do the plugs, and not oily residue on the throttle body either.

Well, I know this engine was over engineered to eventually use direct injection and turbos, though none of that has materialized yet, I think. It is an interesting engine and having one in my 200c, I can't fault it for power or smoothness. I can fault whatever people calibrated the electronic throttle. I hope the longevity is good. It does seem to beat up the oil a bit--at least it gets darker much quicker than in my other car with a hemi. A little disconcerting was this summer I noticed the water temp getting up to 235, which made me think something wasn't working right. But apparently this is normal for these engines and they're meant to run this way.

I can't speak for the 200c because I haven't driven one with the PentaStar in it but in the Caravans and Jeeps they are pretty easy on the oil, my father in law is doing 30K oci's yearly with his on Amsoil. (18K miles). The UOA seems fine with remaining TBN and reasonable TAN numbers.

They do run hot, their thermostat opens at 203F, that said mine in traffic will regularly get up to 220F before the fan kicks on high and brings it down. 235F seems a little high though so I would keep an eye on it. Maybe a wonky temperature sensor or sticking thermostat?

Thanks for the post! I rather like that v6. Got a nice BROAD torque curve. I very rarely feel the need to take my 300 above 2500rpm!

As for what oblivion said, mine didn't seem to get dark till right before it was due to a change, that was with Pennzoil Platinum (went about 8k). My 5.7 Durango would get dark after about about 3k miles.

Yeah I know what you mean. Unless I'm passing my PentaStar usually lives at 2500rpm or lower. It's a great engine.

As for oil colour, it's not an indication of useable life. My Santa Fe for example would always have amber coloured oil on the dipstick but the oil was toast at 10,000km (6K miles) because the nitration would be really high. Other oils will turn dark right away. It just depends on the additive package doing its job.

Best way to tell the safe limit is to do a UOA.

Very cool presentation!

For those of you with Pentastars. Do you ever notice kind of a moaning noise from the bottom end of the engine on winter cold starts? My 2013 did it and my 2017 does. If you feel the engine oil pan, you can feel the resonance through the pan. I know this was a complaint early on with Pentastars and we've talked about it hear over the years. I recall asking the dealer about it years ago when I was in for service. The SA's response was something along the lines that FCA will no longer pay them under warranty to troubleshoot this specific noise some owner's complain about.

That groaning is normal. The one I drove for work (2012) that my dad owns now (has 300K on it) and my 2018 both do it, although the 2018 is much less noticeable. There was a head revision between these 2 vehicles so that could be part of it.

It's how you know it's running with the remote starter though...
