The local Blaine's Farm & Fleet in IL has Pennzoil conventional for 1.98$ a quart or $23.88 a case in multiple grades as well as Formula Shell for $1.88 a quart or $22.68 a case and Shell Rotella T 15W40 for $10.68 a gallon. I have read the raves on the YB, and would like suggestions on brand & application grades for my vehicles. I am loving this site more and more by the day!

1. I have a 2002 Saturn with the 1.9L SOHC 5-Speed 155k original miles which has always gotten the cheapest 5W30 conventional with Wix filters using the GM OCI reminder and leaks a little oil in rear main seal but not much on its 3rd and last of a case of Mobil Clean 5000. I am the 2nd owner and know the original who took care of this car very very well.

2. Honda Certified 2003 Odyssey with 3.5L VTEC 69k miles, just purchased with Honda certified used warranty and am due for my first oil change at 70k miles I get Honda filters for $2 so I will use those. I am the 2nd owner.

3. 2005 Chevy Blazer 4.3L 5-Speed 28k original miles which has seen nothing but Mobil 1 Truck/SUV 5W30 Super Synthetic with Mobil 1 Extended Performance filters & Shell 93 Octane since it's first oil change at every 4k or less miles. I am debating switching to regular conventional as I don't drive this vehicle but maybe 4k miles a year now with minimal highway driving. I try to keep Techron in every tank of gas as this car sits for a week or three at a time without being driven, especially in the winter. Yes it is my baby, and yes I am so upside down in payments I plan to keep forever. I didnt used to have to pay for oil changes for this truck but I do now and lost my job, so I am super broke. I have considered switching to Pennzoil Platinum though. I am the original owner and have listed mods in my signature.

P.S. I do the maintenance on my parent's two 2002 Santa Fes one is fwd & one is awd both with about 70k miles and I think I remember seeing 15w40 as an acceptable weight in the owners manual. I know they give like 4 different choices. I was considereing purchasing the Rotella T for these vehicles.

Thanks in advance for everyone's time and advice. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

Question: Why burn 93 octane in a 4.3 l Chevy engine? Had one for years and always ran regular, which is what is specified. It ran fine and would give me 25 mpg hiway. You could save $0.30/gallon here.

It's a good deal, when PB ran it Black Friday I was all over it. If someone ran it again, I'd buy more at that price.

Boomer,

I had my PCM tuned for towing & hauling reasons and just prefer to use the 93 Octane with more additives. Plus 93 Octane sits for longer periods of time better than 87. I went from 15mpg city to 17mpg city so I regained some of the extra cost in the premium so I just stick with it.

Does anyone think that I will run into problems if I switch the Saturn from 5W30 to 5W20 with 155k on the clock? I wold like to buy two cases of the 5W20 for the Honda and Saturn.

I'll let you know if changing from a 5W30 to a 5W20 poses any issues. I did it to an Aerostar with 165,000 miles the beginning of December. Ford back-spec'd them to 5W20, so far so good.

Thanks Frank. Simplicity would be nice with stocking and changing my own oil with the Saturn and Honda and save me a few $ so that I can continue to afford and use synthetic in the Blazer since it has extreme OCIs conditions.

No problem! I made certain Ford had back-spec'd mine before trying the 5W-20. I did read up a lot on it as well, seemed like it was worth a try. My only regret is I don't really track MPG's with it, but I can almost swear its doing a little better on gas. I have also been watching the dip stick for fear of increased oil use. I am about 850 miles into the OCI and there is nothing unusual to report. When I get to around the 1500 mile mark that will tell me the story. I have a feeling its all going to work out for the better.

Just make sure both cars call for or were back spec'd for the 5W20 and then go for it!

You can try switching to the 20 wt, but if you notice more consumption with the 20 go back to the 30wt.

On my 98 SC2 I had a slight rear main leak plus consumption of a quart every 800 miles. Previous owner used M1 or Mobil 7500 5w30. I switched to High Mileage GTX 10w30 and the leak went away as did the consumption (following a little MMO treatment.)
