No need to do that. You can put a camera down the spark plug hole. Not sure if that's what this guy did or not, though...

robert

How is the cleanliness of the piston top (that shouldn't see any appreciable oil unless the valve seals or rings are buggered) going to tell you anything about the oil "cleaning"?

The ring land area is where any improvement would occur in terms of piston cleanliness and that would require disassembly to verify.
The camera!!!

👆🏻 has a point there

Ut oh. Mobil 1 is apparently moving to GTL and guess where their plant is...

Actually we don't know where their plant is, LOL!

They axed their big plant in Qatar when it went massively over budget but they had other projects in the works.

I can't find anything on their current operating GTL plant, though I know they were pursuing several of them back when they were in deep with the Qatar one.

They and CP also were working on experimental plants in the US too.

EDIT: I see your edit now after posting this

Yes, they abandoned the Qatar plant, though they still have plenty of gas operations there.

Mobil uses various amounts of PAO in their formulations, some more than others. Since it helps them achieve their higher performance, I can't see them moving away from it, in fact, Mobil has opened a PAO refinery in Texas a little while ago. This has really allowed them to ramp up their production on their PAO basestocks. Which, they said in the news story, due to increasing advancement of new engines, they are expecting the demand for high performance oils only to increase worldwide, thus, increasing the need for more PAO.

I do like how Mobil is an American company. Pennzoil and Quaker State were bought up by Shell. Castrol was bought by BP.

Yes, they do use a fair chunk of PAO, as has been able to be gleaned from numerous MSDS sheets. The latest MSDS sheet for the new Mobil 1 FS 0w-40 shows GTL however, and in a rather significant slug.
