I don't know much about cars.

I've had a faulty PCV valve for a few months and finally got it fixed. do you think it messed up my oil?

If you're worried, you can just change the oil.

4.5 qts + new filter = low $ for peace of mind.

I've learned that if I don't change my PCV on my old Dakota every 5,000 miles, the oil consumption goes up. So, it might have an effect on the oil condition.

i'm not exactly sure how it was faulty but my CEL said i had a vacuum leak and sometimes i would have a weird smell like something was burning.

changing the oil isn't really cheap for me since i run amsoil 0w-20 and the Ea oil filter haha. i was hoping to run the oil for 10,000 but now i'm not sure. i'm close to 4,000 on the oil.

PCV stands for Positive Crankcase Ventilation. Essentially it rprevents too much pressure from building up in the crankcase. Pressure will cause oil to be forced past the rings. So a gummed up PCV will increase oil consumption. I wouldnt change the oil , just because you changed it.

The valve should open with pressure but not be wide open. If they open up, your intake can vacuum oil right into your intake manifold and cause excessive consumption.

if the check engine light was on for a vacuum leak and i'd get burnt smells, would that mean it was wide open?

I am having the exact same problem, and it has also lessened after cleaning the PCV valve, then randomly started up again. Maybe I should change out the PCV valve for the metal one I bought in the states.

I change it out every 60K miles, but at 30K I take it out and clean it. Make sure to get it from the dealer.

Many years ago I had an 85 E-150 Van and was obsessed with caring for it. Anyway I did a major tune up and replaced the MC PCV valve with a Fram PCV valve. I went from using no oil at all to 1 qt/1000 miles. I went to the dealer and got the MC part, problem solved. If you replace the PCV valve get one from the dealer.

PCV valves are a check valve but for the most part are always open a small amount. They will induce flow through the crankcase from the valve cover inlet hoses (after the MAF) through an oil separator then into the intake manifold.

The check valve part is to limit the intake vacuum level so there is not such a large flow that oil vapors are only pulled into the intake and not actual oil.

PCV valves are part of a system. If changing the valve doesn't give you the desired response, change or clean the hose, as well as the grommets where they enter the valve cover.
OEM PCVs are always a point of argument. Some replacement makers don't have the quality control you're paying for.
I replace the valve at 30k, and clean/replace the hoses etc. @60k. Not difficult or expensive. Hoses collapse on the inside! They can look great on the outside.

Like I posted in another thread. I just killed my oil consumption by changing the PCV valve. Drive-thru was the best test, and I did it the same night. No smoke blowing in the window, no smoke when pulling out.
