The manual for my Toyota Ipsum (aka Picnic, aka Avenis) states Dex III ATF for the power steering fluid. It states the Toyota Type T-IV ATF for the Auto Transmission. Understand from this forum that the Type T-IV is supposedly new kind of formulation to cater for the new transmission requirement. Does this mean that the T-IV is slightly superior than Dex III? If so, can we use the T-IV ATF for the Power Steering instead?

Can we also use the Castrol Power Steering fluid? The website does not indicate Dex III or anything for this power steering fluid.

From what I understand about Toyota Type IV fluid, it is an ATF with additional friction modifiers. I do not know how these modifiers would affect the power steering.

As crucual as good steering is to the safe operation of the vehicle, and as readily available as Dex III ATF is, I would use what the manual calls for. I use Dex III Mobile 1 ATF in my power steering on my Toyota with good success so far.

The Toyota T-IV is the oil used for Aisin-Warner transmissions in several automobiles including Toyota, Lexus, Audi, Saturn, Ford, Volvo, Volkswagen, Saab, Porsche and Mitsubishi:

It is a friction-modified semi-synthetic and is really not interchangeable with Dexron III. Therefore, except in an emergency, it's the wrong thing for the power steering.

Just pick up a quart of a major brand Dexron III. It's not very expensive.

Cost is not an issue here. In fact, I have some left overs from the 4 litre packing of Type T-IV as the Auto Trans only took about three-quarter of the whole pack. Was actually contemplating using the remainder as the power steering fluid.

Certain Aisin-Warner transmissions need Dexron-III ATF...other Aisin-Warner transmissions require the highly friction modified ATF.

Does this mean that the Type T-IV is slightly better than the Dex III?

If so, does this mean that we should be able to use the higly friction modified T-IV in Power Steering units that only ask for Dex III?

The extra friction modification in T-IV fluids is there to prevent shudder in the CSTC automatic transmission systems.

IF your Ipsum PS hydraulic pump does not have any wet clutches, then T-IV should work in your PS. Both the ATF and PS are hydraulic oils of 7.0 to 8.5 cSt, with the T-IV fluid having a better base oil and specialized friction modifiers.

Toyota, I believe, is simply trying to save the driver some bucks when it comes to PS fluid, rather than having him use the more expensive T-IV fluid.

I am not too sure if the P/S has wet clutches.

Surprisingly, the Toyota T-IV fluid is almost the same price as the Dex III ATF. Thats why I was thinking if I could put the T-IV into the P/S.

When the mechanic siphoned out the P/S fluid the other day, the container was full of sludge (thick patches). Would anyone know what these could be?

Cheers

Saw from the Amsoil website that their ATF is approved for DEX III and T-IV.

Approved or "Meets" the requirements?

I doubt they are approved, but should meet or exceed the FM and viscosity requirements.

Apologies for the wrong usage of words. Should be "meets"....

To the best of my knoldge all Toyota use Dex II or III depending on age for their P/S. I do not think that Toyota has ever used or approved the use of actual power steering fluid or T-IV ATF for their powersteering system.

In recent years Toyota has started useing un-dyed Dex III atf in the P/S system so it has a brown color from the factor.

I have a 2002 Ford F-150 and the power steering calls for Mercon/DexronIII. And from the factory it's an amber color also. Not pink/redish like the Mercon/DexronIII ATF you buy in the store. I wonder why

?

I changed Toyota ATF from thr factory before,it's light golden color and does not smell anything like ATF.
