Oversize Filter for Nissan VQ35

I want to say it is the 51348. If you just ask for a filter for a VQ30 you will get that filter. A 2000 Maxima for example (VQ30) uses the bigger filter, which works on the VQ35.

51356 is the longer filter. The 51365 is the short version.

Well, the Purolator filters for 51348 is PL10241 and 51356 is PL14610. The bypass PSI, outer diameter, and thread pitch are all different. No clue if it'll fit though.

PL14459 also works on my 2004 Altima with VQ35. But was found that the PL14610 actually has more filter media than the PL14459 (105 sq-in vs. 85 sq-in), so use that one instead.

PL14610 is rated 99.9% at 40 microns, PL14459 is 99.9% at 20 microns IIRC.

True ... probably due to the type of bypass valve used (metal vs. fiber seal). I can't see why the filter media would be different between filters in the PureOne line.

The 4 smallest spin-on filters that Purolator makes have the "45 record adapter" bypass valve due to room constraints, and all of those have the worse efficiency rating. Correlation?

As said before, the 51356 (or NAPA Gold 1356) is the longest filter you'll find for the VQ35. Go to Purolator's website and you'll see they recommend the short filter (14612), just like Nissan does (15208 65F0D) - at least for my 2004 Altima with VQ35.

Purolator used to recommend the 14610 for my 05 Altima VQ35. They started to recommend the short 14612 about 2 years ago. Fram still recommends the longer filter for my car.

Same with my 2004 Altima. I could never figure that move out since the 14610 fit just fine. Maybe because Nissan specified the shorter filter for the V6 and the longer filter for the 4 cylinder (?).

Actually the shorty 14612 was spec'd for my 03 Altima 2.5L. I always used to 14610 size except once when I fit the 14459 on it.

The shorty 14612 is also the spec'd size for 2010 G37S. Put my son on to the PL14610 size and he has no issues with the fit.

No idea why Nissan specs the shorter filter where the longer 14610 easily fits.

The only thing I can think of for Nissan or Purolator recomending the 14612 filter is, to possibly help cut down on some of that notorius start up rattle(timing chanin rattle). I know that anytime I have used a larger filter on my Altima, the startup rattle was worst. And the larger the filter i.e.(#24458-discontinued), the worst the noise.

Here's what I found for my '04 350Z:

The Wix 51318 is the biggest filter you can buy with the small metric base and it even fits on the engine. While it has 314sq in of media, it has a lame ADBV so there's start-up rattle. And, it's expensive (like $14) and hard to find.

The best choice is the Purolator PL14619 with 211sq in of media. It's easy to find and I paid maybe $6.50 for one. No start-up rattle with this one because of the silicone ADBV. The gasket is larger, but the landing on the engine is huge so it fits just fine. I don't know about the Wix-equivalent 51626 since I've not looked at one.

The L14619 is very similar to the PL14619, but has a mere 176sq in of media. I'm not sure about the ADBV and I've not tried one.

The L14610 I cut open had a measly 103sq in of media.

I'll be using the PL14619.

Will have to look into the 14619 ... seems like it would be pretty large if it has twice the media area of the 14610. I've been running 14610s and they seem to work well, and 103 sq-in of media isn't actually that bad for that sized of filter.

Well, I'm not sure how that filter would fit. Purolator doesn't list the gasket size, but the Wix 51626 equivalent says the gasket has an OD of 2.834 and ID of 2.462. The spec'd 51356 (same as the Puro PL14610) says gasket OD 2.475, ID 2.175. Doesn't look to match up to me.

It is ~1" wider than 51356/14610, but if the gasket doesn't match...

The spec'd 51316 is same as the Puro PL/L14610. The PL14459 or Wix 51334 (NG1334) is bigger(same gasket size), wider but shorter. However, it has been shown here that at least in the Purolator, the spec'd PL14610 has a bit more media area than the PL14459.

when you are buying oil filters for 3.5 just tell them u drive 02 nissan altima 2.5 and u get a bigger filter :)simple as that thats what i did the first time i wanted a bigger oil filter for my 350Z

The gasket for the PL14619 is larger than on the L14610, as noted in my original post. In fact, the gasket for the 14610 just about fits inside the 14619's gasket. However, the landing for the gasket on my 350Z is huge, so the 14619 fits and seals just fine. I know this because I ran one for 5000 miles without any issue (or start-up rattle). No leaks at all and the pressure looked fine.

I can't say anything about the VQ35 in any other car. It's entirely possible the landing on the engine in a Altima is not large enough. If it has the same "oil cooler" my 350Z has, the 14619 should fit.
