Out of his mind? 40W for best mileage?

It would be very interesting to hear what the thin oil people will think of this one.

We've been learning and reading that thin is and that thicker is not necessarily better, but I NEVER would have thought that a beauty-related product would improve combustion and gas mileage?!?

These guy's sound like a bunch of Internet Engineers.

Only one unique oil in the world actually brings engine friction nearly to zero. That truly high performance oil comes from a small company in Santa Fe Springs, California called Torco International. We recommend their 20W-50, 15-W40 and/or their straight 40-weight MPZ oils and additives. We get it in 5-gallon pails. We use their motorcycle and diesel oils for everything. You can expect a 15 to 30-percent boost in mileage with all piston engines in cars, trucks, motorcycles, aircraft and heavy equipment. Plus greatly improved life of the parts. NEVER use 5w30 or 5W-20 oil because it is closer to a grinding compound than a lubricant. We always add Torco MPZ Magnetic Additive and a bottle of EAL Engine Assembly Lube every oil change

Half his ideas sound reasonable and the other half poppycock.

He likes NGK copper plugs and Baldwin filters, but his explanations sound like snake oil... and I'd hate that to tarnish often respected products.

Oh come on - because it's on the web it must be true....how about this beaut:

quote:

Only a really good filter can turn black dirty oil to a light brown.

Maybe that's true - but he is talking full flow and we hardly see this with bypass!!

As for:
quote:

What kind of mileage increase will acetone give my car? Normally from 15% to 35% depending on your driving habits and how many of our mileage suggestions you have taken. We know an aeronautical engineer in San Jose whose test car went from a baseline of 19.3 MPG to 27. He certified this with his ScanGauge. That is a genuine boost of 27%.

That is PURE bovine scat marks!

OK, the viscosity issue aside, how does the Torco oil actually rate in the article. I've checked out their site and wish that is wasn't so expensive or I'd try it. I just love to try new and improved things as everybody's been finding out.

I'm still just leary about putting beauty products into my gasoline (just doesn't even SOUND right!!!)

While I haven't bought into the CAFE thin oil movement this author doesn't inspire me any.

I notice that the really oil knowlegeable contributors on this forum are not pushing the thinner is better. If the highly respectable contributors come around to endorsing the thinner stuff I'd have to take another look. So far they haven't done that.

Everyone has an opinion. Whether or not it is based on fact is anyone's guess.

And i think methanol and ethanol has been maligned in the press.

That iantaylor paper is good reading.

Seriously Mola - the only way a car could go from 19 mpg to 27 mpg from a couple oz.'s of acetone in the tank would be cleaning of injectors or something.....I'm just not biting. Assume a car engine in perfect tune - add 3 oz of acetone to a 14 gallon tank and go from a sustained 19 mpg to 27 mpg sustained, remove the acetone and return to 19, add acetone again and pop up to 27 mpg?!?!?! Our problems would be solved!!!!!!!!!

This one is classic:

"Q: Why do you suggest using straight 40-weight oil for mileage?
A: Most good oils contain some amount of BRIGHT STOCK rather than polymers which do not lubricate well. Bright stock has excellent load carrying ability, stability, lubricity and long life. It costs more than polymers but protects components such as cams very well and gives better MPG in normal weather."

Okay, polymers means additives, sometimes including VIIs. Bright Stock is just a variety of Group II.
Ummmm.... additives are usually more expensive than the base stock, right?
I'd read that many additives were more expensive than even Group IV or V base stocks.
Wow.
These guys are different.
Until I saw that they're trying to sell their goods and services, I'd almost been tempted to think they were trolls.

Q. What brand of oil filter can improve mileage?
A. Only a really good filter can turn black dirty oil to a light brown.

O, man. You have to have a talent to he come up with statements like these..

Don't worry, Mola. Evolution and global warming are also being put in the category of religious belief systems -- even by some people who consider themselves scientists.

I would like to see the acetone using folks analyze the motor oil and use my interpretation.

The oil recommendation makes sense to optimize ring seal but he is giving up efficiency in added fluid drag using a heavier straight weight, unless it is a syn base. Bright stock is just a clean cut of refined petroleum oil it is a coke source unless changed or inhibited chemically. Old technology with better options now that are polymer. GC 0w30 is a good example.

His comments about oil adds are old news and not appropriate any longer.

Who is the author ?
