Well I thought that I had a good Christmas going and would actually be able to put money in the savings account in December. Things were going well, until last Monday.

Water leak in the garage. The garage and kitchen are adjacent to one another. The Sunday prior, I noticed the pergo-type floor start to become uneven. The wife noticed the leak in the garage. A plumber came out and fixed it. $205 for the full repair. (This is the 3rd pipe break/leakage since we've been in the house. We're the only owners of the home, it was built 5 1/2 years ago. We moved in shortly after it was built).

Add $500 for insurance deductible to replace the kitchen floor.

This past Sunday, the right side of our dog's mouth ( short haired lab ) swelled up something fierce. Busted tooth and all the puss and swelling that goes along with it. She went for surgery yesterday. $560

Wednesday night, I went to add on an external Seagate 320GB drive to my wife's computer that I purchased during Best Buy's week of T-giving sale (paid only $26 after tax with coupons and gift cert's!!, yes, part of the cheapskate thread! LOL). I moved the computer, looked at it, and it powered off. Yes, it powered itself off as I looked at it. No joke. I thought maybe the surge strip blew. Nope. The power supply (this and video card were replaced 18 months ago after a surge strip bit the dust) didn't make nary a sound. So I brought home a similar HP & Dell PC's that were collecting dust in our store room to see if I could make 1 working PC out of 3 of them w/o needing to reinstall every thing. Nope. Nothing. Dead as dead gets save for the green light on the motherboard. Odd.

OK, so my wife needs to ship out a few small things from eBay today, so last night I setup my work laptop with her printer, Canon MP600 (a very nice printer by the way), spent over 90 minutes trying to get Windows to see the printer. No dice. I said (I can't repeat what I said)...then got our old Canon printer (iP4200) plugged it in, right away Windows recognized it and the driver was installed.

The USB hub on the motherboard popped itself and the printer. Time for a new computer & printer. $800

The last 11 days cost me $2065. So much for putting money in savings.

Still haven't gotten those drums yet. $400. That makes is $2465.

Merry frigggin Christmas, the Grinch is here. LOL

Two weeks ago my good friend and co-worker of 30 years died very unexpectedly from a heart attack. Active, healthy, great guy. He was only 55.

Hey, T&S, we feel your pain. Been there, done that.

I wanted to toss out the famous "don't sweat the small stuff", but I would be such a hypocrite.

No kids in your story? They amplify all problems ten fold. Especially teens.....I almost have my lawyer bills from 8 years ago paid off!

Merry Holidays everyone.

Well, I am thankful for my health and my kid's health. Strep is gone, that seemed like a mild bump in the road compared to this stuff. LOL

Son turns 8 tomorrow. We plan on spending the day going to a couple fun places he likes (NO, not chucky cheese! LOL). It will be fun. Daughter is 6...they're both the greatest.

I should change my signature to say "Doing my part to keep America from spending too little this Holiday season".

That sorta puts water leaks and computer problems in perspective, doesn't it? :2cents:

Wow -- sorry to hear about your troubles. That's usually how things go: when it rains, it pours. Things can only get better. Spend time with the family over the Holidays, and forget about it all.

That's a rough December TNS! That's the only problem with floating laminate flooring IMO. If water gets under it, it's done for.

Doitmyself, sorry to hear about your buddy. It doesn't get much worse than that.

If I learned one thing during my eight-plus years of flying in the Marines, it was to never, ever, ever even think anything along the lines of, "what could happen next..."

Med. Ins. = Medical Insurance.

Most company coverage in the USA has a maximum amount that the insured person/family pays in a 12 month enrollment period. In and of itself it's not a bad thing. Ours is $2000 per person and $4000 per family. This means no matter the cost of the medical expenses for the year, we won't have to fork out (out of pocket) more than $4000. Basically protects you from going broke.....point being in 23 years of marriage we've never come close to this max....this year....my total neck stuff (April-December) was around $10K+ (of course didn't cost me that much), wife's surgery bills haven't hit yet......kinda glad to get that in this year...plan starts again Jan 1.

T&S, is your kitchen and garage on the same level? My kitchen adjoins with the garage too, but the garage is about 12 inches lower than the rest of the house.

One spring I had, in short order, frozen heat pipes, a sick cat, an annual homeowner's insurance bill (pay all at once to save $$$), a 6-month real estate tax bill, income taxes, and something else I forget.

At least most of us are car savvy and maybe even mechanically inclined-- those are depressing suprise bills for lots of people.
