What do you guys think about Walmart Supertech oil filters? They are only $2.85 regardless of the oil filter size or application.

Supertech is one of the brands that displays their efficiency rating as 95% @ 29 microns instead of using the greater than symbol you see on STP packaging.

It is exactly the same as a Napa Proselect. Its a fine filter for a short OCI. I personally avoid using the filters that have the combo ADBV/Bypass valve. Not all applications use the combo valve.

I agree about the rubber bypass/drain back valve. Also its too easy to get a filter with a better efficiency rating for 1 or 2 dollars more.

I got the feeling from reading post on the internet that its almost sacrilege to say anything negative about Wix filters.

I was under the impression Champ made Super Tech, not Wix.

I avoid all E-core filters. Some fail, some don't. I won't gamble.

Wal-mart also sells Motorcraft oil filters, which are basically "Pure One" filters. A **great** filter for as little as they cost.

@20 microns or >20 microns is essentially the same thing ... just hair splitting, ie; 20.0001 microns is >20 microns.

That was years ago. Now they are made by Wix. Not sure if you are serious or sarcastic about the Motorcraft. Most members here wrote Purolator a while ago since they began to show up with torn media.

To make things interesting Wix is now owned my Mann-Hummel. They are same people that own Purolator. Everyone is now watching their Wix filters very closely as Purolator's problems began to surface after the M+H takeover.

Like others said, the ST is a cheap Wix, like the Proselect but consolidated. It is a good deal, and cheap Wixes are the best economy-tier filters, but sometimes Napa has a sale on their Silver filters which can be cheaper than Walmart depending on the filter type.

However, $2.85 for the ST9018 is an excellent value (GM Ecotec filter, almost everybody charges extra for a cartridge even though they actually cost less to make)

Yup, the ST9818 is a great deal (or most any cartridge filter), I pulled a NAPA ProSelect (basically what the ST is) out of my mom's Vue with the 2.2 and it looked great, a lot better than some of the more expensive filters out there for it.

I do plan on using the ST2 filter on my truck that has the combo valve, not crazy about the design, but for my use in the truck it should be just fine.

I think the rubber drain back valve/bypass valve leaks at all pressure differences in Supertech oil filters. There is a small amount of side to side play where the rubber bypass valve fits into the metal end cap. I think oil always leaks past the open area between the bypass valve and metal end cap and avoids passing through the filter media; probably the reason it has a lower efficiency rating. Its a very small amount of play, but still, it should be a tight seal. I wonder what the efficiency rating is at 20 microns? I wonder how flexible the rubber valve gets at high temperatures?

An opinion without any facts to back it up.

Extrapolation yields 68% efficiency at 20 microns, using the only other published data point of 83% efficiency at 25 microns for Napa ProSelect in conjunction with 95% efficiency at 29 microns.

I ran one Napa PS 27899 on my Ram truck and one Napa PS 27502 on my wife's Mustang. By the end of a 3K miles run the ADBV function was compromised on the 27899 and by the end of a 5K run both ADBV & BPV functionality were compromised on the 27502. Both these filter models use combo valves.

If $2 matters - the Fram TG's filter well and have a good ADV - that was one of my mainstay filters before FU took over.

...... or buy a vehicle with vertical filters that doesn't use a ADBV or filter bypass..... ie.... my Chevy.

More people should realize that if they spend $3 more, they can use the red silicone ADBV filter for double OCIs. Help save the landfill / environment also.
