Then there is a 2.0 turbo I think...that should be a fun engine...with even more heat!

The 2-liter turbo is what was being discussed/pictured above, and yes, this engine is used in both VW and Audi vehicles.

The old VW 2.0 (non-turbo) hasn't been used for a while now. It did not suffer from valve deposit issues (since it's not direct-injected), but it had some issues of its own, such as high oil consumption.

I use to have an 85 Monte Carlo with the 4.3L V6 about 15 years ago. I first tried Havoline dino in it and it would burn about a quart of oil between 3,000 mile oci. Switched to Valvoline 10w30 dino and it never burned a drop.

Wow I've read this a few times here, and have no reason to doubt you. I've used PYB since the 70's, and still use it, my engines were always clean, even under severe service useage.

I've never had any "problems" with oils per say, I have experienced on some of my engines that they run more quietly on the same grade but differnt brand of oil, (like oil filter in all cases). All of the above have been major respected brands

My observations have been similar to yours.

In 1990 or 91 Valvoline had a coupon for some free oil which I took advantage of. Used some in daughters 1978 Malibu V6
result a rod went out and took some lobes off the cam.
put a extra bottle in my riding lawn mower that spring. result lost the con. rod in that engine too.
Since then I will never use Valvoline in anything I own

Im my 1998 3000GT. Drove it home and around for a few weeks on the dealer`s bulk 10W30,car ran smooth as silk. Changed the oil to Syntec 10W30 and got immediate lifter tapping and piston slap, whether cold or hot. Replaced it with Valvoline dino, all noise was gone and ran like a dream again. No more Castrol products for me. Car had only 40k miles on it,upper valvetrain was spotless and car was in mint condition.

Is it just me or does that look like a Gorilla staring through an odd shaped hole?

Anyway, back on topic: have only ever used Mobil 1 and no complaints. Changing to PU and of course I'll let you know if I don't like it!

I still believe in the Fahrvergnugen. Even if they put Gorillaz in the Engine. Maybe thats the Turbo and not a Gorilla, but...

As to the question i cant think of an Oil that caused an issue Maybe i had a Synthetic oil cause a leak but even that i cant recall, i just know that putting a Fully Synthetic Oil in a High Miles car may not be the best way to go. Some people report Zero problems with even that, but it seems Oil at its Riskiest application right there...

Full Synthetic in Hi-Miles Engine.

(Added) Also, Straight-Weight or Single Weight Oil even if its SAE30 may cause an issue unless you got an old Volkswagen Bug, because there is no thinner-ness to it to promote Cold Circulation when the engine Starts.

I religiously changed the oil in a small block chevy every 3k, along with an AC Delco filter, and after 30k miles I had about an inch of sludge build up on the cylinder heads. Obviously Penzoil has improved since then but I can't even look at a bottle of Penzoil without remembering that mess.

I used pyb in the 80`s in Louisiana,in my 8 cyl olds and 4 banger Mercury Lynx. Never any problem.

In my lieftime I had one issue. I put 20W-50 in a 98 ZX2 2.0L Zetec engine. Though it was hot summertime, it seems that the VCT (variable cam timing) solenoid faults with heavy oil. The car kept stalling and tripping cam sensor code faults. Switching to 5w30 was an instant fix, and the problem never resurfaced.

I my lifetime I also had only one issue also...I put 20w50 in a 88 Town Car...The 5.0 [302] sounded worse then a broken washing machine when it was cold and did not even sound right when it was warmed up...This was in July in NYC...When I went back to the 10w30 I was good to go again.

I can only imagine what 20w50 would do to a 4.6 modular V8.

Interesting. When did this happen? Have you tried any other non dino oil since?

I don`t have that car anymore. I drove it for a couple of years and then I traded it for my current car (96 Z32). I`ve tried a couple of different synths in my Nissan (Mobil 1 and Royal Purple) and haven`t had any weird issues at all. Maybe that car just didn`t like grp III oil or just the Syntec, who knows. But with Syntec it literally sounded like I was starting it up with no oil in the sump. The noise scared the daylights out of me! Same oil filters too,OEM Mitsubishi.

Mobil 1 Tri-Synthetic 10W30, 1995 Subaru 2.2. The engine used 2.5 quarts per 5K with this oil. It used 0.5 quart per 5K with every other oil that I used during the 200K that I owned this car.

Back then we used to call Penzoil the "salesmans oil", meaning if your driving was all highway miles you were fine, but if the majority of your driving was in town, you would get a sludge buildup. After pulling the heads and pan and cleaning everything I started using Valvoline and never had the problem again. I traded the car for the 85 Mustang GT "four eye" that I still own, which has seen nothing but Motorcraft and Valvoline. Pulled the heads a couple years ago and can still the the cross hatching in the cylinders.
