hello guys,

I'm planning to change engine oil for my volvo S60R.

Under the hood, it says it needs ACEA A3/B3 type oil and recommended weight is 0W30.
(0W.. well maybe because it's from northern europe)

anyway,

I'm considering 3 candidates like below but alternative recommendation will be welcome to.

1) Pennzoil Ultra Euro 5w30
2) Pennzoil Platinum 5w30
3) Shell Ultra Helix AM-L 5W 30 (from Europe)

BTW, Lucas Synthetic oil is that bad one?
Some of my friends told me that.

Thanx in advance.

Joon.

Where are you located? If you're in the US, you don't want to run low/mid-SAPs oils such as PUE 5w30. I suspect the particular Helix you mentioned is also low/mid-SAPs. I mean, you can run it, but would not be able to run extended oil change intervals with it.

PP 5w30 does not meet ACEA A3.

My recommendations would be M1 0w-40, PUE 5w-40, or GC 0w-30.

Irvine, CA?
Use either Syntec 0W-30 (made in Germany on the back label, although I doubt there is any US made Syntec 0W-30 still out there) or M1 0W-40.
You could probably use a number of others in your climate, but either the M1 or the GC will work well and are readily available.
Plat 5w30 is not an A3 oil, although if you can find Ultra Euro formula, it would also be a good choice.

The gasoline quality here in the US makes low/mid saps oils tough to run through the full Oil change interval (OCI) most of the euro cars specify. They have low TBN's and acids affect them.

SO Follow the recommendations of the two above posters (Quattro, and FOUT).

Castrol Syntec 0w30 and M1 0w40 are the best choices.

Hello, We're on our 2nd V70 and there are 3 Saab turbos in the family. It's been nothing but GC 0W-30 and M1 0W-40 in our fire breathers. Don't be spooked by the "0W" designation. It's been a long time since I read why they made it up. I think it was merely to alert people to the European spec. Best of luck with your R. Kira

Oh, i mean it came from colder weather so it needs lighter one like 0W.

Thanx much.

Oh, you're kinda viking holic like me.
I drove S40 N/A before and plan to have Saab in near future.
I'll try GC 0W-30.
Any recommendation for where to buy?

Thanx.

Yeah, in the US it's only Autozone and Pepboys, unfortunately.

Is M1 0w-40 ACEA A3 rated? Of course.

I guess GC and M1 0W40 are good choices.
I run Total Quartz Energy 9000 0W30 in my Euro hardware. Excellent UOA's, and in my case, most of all, probably the most cold fluidity of the other two. Made a HUGE difference in cold startup as far as valvetrain noise is concerned. Practically eliminated it, especially on the BMW.

Have fun. Drive Safe.
