I just bought a used 2004 Audi A4 Q with the 3.0L V6; about 102k miles on it. I'm looking for suggestions on which oil I should use.

Years ago I used M1 0w40 (a little spendy IMHO) on my GTI 1.8T with good UOA results but (obviously) that was a turbocharged motor and am wondering if it's necessary to go to the expense of the M1 with the NA V6 in this car. I have a company car that I drive for work so I only will drive the Audi about 6000 miles a year.

I'd stick with M1 0w-40 as well. It costs about $5/qt when you catch it on sale. I don't think you'll find any other quality synthetic out there for much less than that.

Use Rotella T6 5W-40. Inexpensive, and perfectly suited to this application. With 6k miles/year, you can easily go 1 year on changes.

I am going with the 0w40 crew on this one. On sale now at AAP in fact $29.99 w/ Bosch D+ oil filter. You cant beat it and it can easily go for a year. I agree with addy guy that the 5w40 would work but I don't think any can argue it is a better oil than M1 for non HDEO uses. at least.

Amsoil says:

LUBRICANTS & FLUIDS:
Engine Oil
Grade 1......SJ
Performance AMSOIL European Car Formula 100% Synthetic 5W-40 Motor Oil (AFLQT)
Maximum Performance SAE 10W-40 Synthetic High Performance Motor Oil (AMOQT)
Performance Plus XL 10W-40 Synthetic Motor Oil (XLOQT)
All TEMPS......5W-40, 5w30

Don't cheap out on the oil with the 3.0l engine. They are cam eaters and if you haven't replaced a cam yet, you will. Stick with a VW502 approved oil like GC or M1 0w-40 to maximize life and avoid long OCI's. They don't cost any more than other syn oils and can be found for $6/qt on sale. RT6 would also be a good choice even though it is not 502 approved.

The 2.8l 30v engine was one of VAG's best engines and then they replaced it with the 3.0l. Mistake!

Thanks for all the input: I guess I'll stick with the M1. I just got it on sale at Napa for $5.98/qt. Not too bad a price, but with as few miles I'll be putting on the car I'm not really too concerned about the expense.
