Hey guys. A friend just picked up a new jetboat that has a fresh 454 with stock crank and cam, mostly stock but may upgrade w/performance parts in the future. The boat will be used on flat water in northern california and hits very high speeds/rpm. There is no engine owner's manual and being that it's a custom setup there is no spec sheet with oil requirements. That said, let the recommendations fly! Thanks.

Without a doubt I'd definitely go with Mobil 1 15W-50 silver cap. It was designed with flat-tappet, high-performance engines (like the 454) in mind. The cost is also reasonable at about $21 for a 5-quart jug at Wal Mart.

From Mobil's website:
"Mobil 1 15W-50 is formulated with SuperSyn, an extra-high viscosity synthetic fluid, plus extra anti-wear additive to provide extra protection for severe service applications such as towing, hauling and racing. Mobil 1 15W-50 is recommended for high performance vehicles including turbocharged and supercharged engines where a thicker oil film is desired.

Mobil 1 15W-50 is also recommended for older valve train designs that may benefit from a higher level of anti-wear normally not required for newer generation vehicles. Mobil 1 15W-50 will also provide better anti-wear protection for higher valve spring tensions in certain racing engines."

Pablo - How does a person decide between using the 10W40 Marine and Diesel oil or the 10W40 Marine oil? Do you have the ZDDP and Detergent levels of each oil?

With all due respects...A Jet pump puts a constant load on the engine. There's no "neutral" it's direct drive to the engine with out any help from gears a transmission in a car and, a jet pump acts like a water brake on a engine dyno. > not enough power w/a too big an impeller it'll choke the engine down.
Below is mine...

My first choice would be Chevron Delo 15W40, and second, Mobil Delvac 1300 Super. I can't comment on the synthetics. I've not used a synthetic heavy duty engine oil.

I use Delvac in my low RPM Diesel that has roller lifters...why would I use diesel oil in a flat lifter cam, high rpm engine that's always under a load?
