Hey guys, I have a 1968 Camaro with a custom built twin turbo 488ci V8. Motor made a little over 900hp on the dyno. So I live in Arizona, and was told by the engine builder to run 20/50. I'm wondering can I run mobil 1 0-40w. I've got tons of 0-40w just laying around. I don't drag her much, just 150 mph runs on desert roads out in the middle of nowhere from time to time

Franklin,

It's a good question but more information is needed about your engine. Does it have roller lifters, roller rockers, or forged pistons? And what is the cam specification or brand and model?

Thanks,
Steve

If the engine builder says 20/50 and you live in a hot area, I would not use a lighter oil.

One oil that might be worth considering is Mobil 1 10w60. There are two types, one for race engines and another for high mileage applications.

Clearances and oil temps as well. Ask why the builder recommends 20w-50. 0w-40 M1 is a light 40. A 15w-50 syn like M1 or NAPA or Redline 10w-40 might be a better idea here.

You need to use a racing oil. Brad Penn, VR 1, Joe Gibbs etc. At the end of the day it's your money. But there is no substitute for high film strength and the non epa neutered additive packs of a true racing oil.

I have used VR1 20W50 the last 5 years and 50K miles in my BMW motorcycle on 6K interval changes. The engine is excepyionally clean and the valve clearance never changes.

You handed your builder a big check for that monster engine but want to second guess his oil choice to use up some oil you have. Surely something else in you sig would be happy with the 0w-40? Think I'd be asking the builder what brand of 20w-50 he prefers...

Cool car, lots of places here to open it up.

Mobil 1 15w50 available at Walmart in jugs, might even be able to get it on the roll back price I think under $23. "might have to site to store it if they don't stock it

For an off the shelf oil I'd say VR1 20w50 as your engine likely has bearing clearances which dictate the use of a 50wt like the builder specified. Another option would be M1 15w50 and you could even get the Mobil mail in rebate to make it a little more affordable. It's a race engine, use an appropriate oil.

the builder prolly wants the 50 (hot) for bearing clearances. Going to a 40 might work, but I would not chance it. VR-1 is not that costly. Just run what the engine wants

Thanks for the responses. Talked to the engine builder, as you guys were saying bearing clearances in the motor and the turbos dictate 50w syn oil. He said I could run a 60w but not a 40w. He said 40w oil will shorten the life of the motor, which seems a little odd to me, but he builds them for a living

I'll try man, the Camaro is much faster than both those cars, but when the boost comes on it will get squirrely real quick. Plus it's got no AC:)

Wheel spin in 3rd gear going over 100mph is scary, at least for my ability

Under the circumstances that the average twin turbo big block lives at, even a stock 454 would have its life shortened running a 40W.

900hp on the wheels...that's a lot of power, this car must be gorgeous. For this aplication I think your engine builder has given you the best engine oil recomendation, I wouldn't second guess it.
