I can assure you that the SVT team know how people will drive this car when it gives it's oil recomendation and CAFE, as other will probably tell you, was not considered for the Cobra. Thicker is NOT better but that seems to be what people are being brainwashed to think here. The easier you can pump the air in and out of the engine the more efficent it wil be and the longer it will last. Running a thicker oil than what is required just puts additional unwanted drag on the engine and extends cold start-ups. 90% of engine wear is during this time. You can pound on the car in the streets all you want with no worries using a synthetic 5W-20 like Amsoil.

I'm not worried at all about start up wear between the Amsoil 5W-20 and Schaeffers. There is only a few cSt difference between the two @40C. Redline 5W-20 looks to be thicker than both @40C.

When I owned an LS1 I used Schaeffers #701 5w30 and when I took it apart for cam swaps the internals(cam, rockers, timing chain/gears etc.) had a healthy film of oil on them, even after sitting for a few days.
Obviously this ist't just a trait of Schaeffers oil but being that my car will only be operated in temps above 50F and if I do start my car in low temps I have a magnetic pan warmer that works great.

The SC 4.6 is a hot blooded motor, and with 4 cams whirring in there I like having the higher HTHS of the Schaeffers, especially in boost when that Eaton blower is churning out the heat.

How are you getting 450HP?

It is rated for 390HP and 390Ft.lbs of torque stock at the flywheel.

They are very underated and actually put out 420 to the flywheel bone stock, which equates to about 370 WHP. Intake and exhaust upgrades are good for about another 30-35 WHP.

Unless something is very wrong, an 03-04 Cobra will put down 395-415 HP at the wheels with just these upgrades.

I will have my car on a dynojet very soon, I'll post the results, I guarantee it will be over 400 HP at the wheels, factor in 12-15% drivetrain loss and that is where my 450 hp came from.

Doesn't look like it is that high to me.

Thanks, that's a perfect example of a stock Cobra putting down 370 HP to the ground, which is about 415 HP at the flywheel. That's 25 more than the Ford advertised 390 HP.

Auto manufacturers advertise their power ratings based on engine dynonameter numbers. However, in some cases they "fudge" the advertised numbers, typically this is seen with high performance cars.

My car has K&N FIPK and Borla catback exhaust, which bumps up the power by at least 30 HP giving me around 400 HP at the ground which equates to 450 flywheel HP.

Stock 03-04 SVT Cobra motor:
engine dynonameter = 415-420 HP (about 25 HP more than Ford advertises)
chassis dynonameter = 360-370 HP (power actually put to the ground)

When a engine is underrated it's actually putting out more power than the manufacturer claim.

Another popular engine that has underrated HP figures from the factory is the LS1. It's advertised at 315 HP in the F-body and 350 HP in the Vette, but actually puts out 370 HP on an engine dynonameter or about 315 HP on a chassis dynonameter through a manual transmission.

I love those cars, but I know Id kill myself in one! My GTO is fast, but with as little as it takes to make 500hp out of those things, whew!

I know what you mean, this thing begs to be driven hard. I love living in North Dakota, no matter where you live it's only a 10 minute drive to be all by yourself in the middle of nowhere with 450 hp at your right foot

A blower pulley is worth another 20 to 30 hp as well.

Ditch the Eaton and get the new Kenne Bell Big Bore 2.6L twin screw.

ATI has a kit as well to ditch the positive displacement all together and go centrifugal; Kenne Bell equipped cars can't even touch the Procharger kit.

There's sooooooooo much hp potential in those Cobras . That's a bad bad machine you got there!

Oh, I think you made a great choice with the Amsoil 5w-20.

370 at the wheels through a T-56 transmission and a 8.8 IRS rearend is right at about 415hp at the crank. Those cars have very conservative ratings of 390/390 and are breathing through a straw in OEM form. Takes very little to make a lot of power out of them. Filter, exhaust and tune and 450+ hp is easily attained.

The new GT500 friend has is using 5W-50 however it's a 5.4L 4 valve with 6250 rpm limit. Most 5.4Ls are 5200 rpm limit due to weak rods and long stroke. Wonder if they opened up any clearances any due to oil weight ?

let him think what he wants to, it makes him sleep better. it's still a nice engine, very clean too! but I've always hated that body style.

nice daily driver.
