Just wondeing what oil people are using in there built Harley V-twin's. Just finished a big bore kit with higher lift cams and head porting. I'm currently using Harley dino for a 500 mile cylinder/piston break in, then want to switch to something that offers great protection. Here's the hard part, I'm not a fan of synthetic oil for my bike!!..Eny suggetions?

How much and how hard are you going to ride it? I ride mine at least every week 2x and much more in summer. I have used harley dino for 11 years with not a problem. I change it often and new oil filter every time. Only time with synthetics used is on long trips(6k mile trips) with no oil changes. Otherwise harley dino oil does great. I ride 10-12 k miles a year or more and mine works wonderfully. Hope you have just as good a ride as mine.

If you check out the Valvoline VR-1 racing oil uoa's, you'll find that oil is that oil is hard to beat for the price. i use it and it works fine for me,and the Valvoline MC oil isn't a bad choice either.,,

Thanx for all the input, I was thinking about the VR-1 or the Penn Grade 1 high performance, the VR-1 is availible in all the auto parts stores here in MI and thats a good thing!!

Since you are not considering synthetics, whatever oil you run I would not run longer than 2-3k mile oil change intervals. I am no fan of Harley oil - but it does work, just overpriced. You can go heavy duty diesel oil or the choices mentioned above.

Me, I would run Mobil 1 or Redline synthetics, but just my opinion based many years of success with my Harleys. These engines are air cooled and any extra margin of safety is worth it to me...syns will take the heat better.

In my 2004 H-D Road King Classic I used Bel-Ray EXS 10W-50 - the engine was a 148 hp S&S 124".

WOW!!..your making some serious power. Is the EXS synthetic? and do you notice allot of valve train noise with it? just curious. Thanks!

A couple of the better known Harley builders (GMR and Hillside) use and recommend Torco conventional straight weight (http://www.torcousa.com/torco_product/st.html). I'll probably try some next oil change, even though my bike is just stock with stage 1--assuming the price isn't too high, that is.

You can also order Brad Penn from Amazon. When I bought a case it was $5/qt delivered so that was a no brainer. Now it's $7 for 20W50 and $8.50 for SAE 50 which is why I went to VR1 at $5 and change.

Hey thanks!..A friend of mine just informed today that he can get me Torco oil at Dealer cost. If the price is right, I will also give it a try. I'm glade to hear that some engine builders recommend it.

IIRC Bel-Ray EXS is fully synthetic ester oil. My engine was very quiet mechanically but then the Rinehart 2-2 exhaust did bark a bit.

From the Bel Ray site...the EXS sounds like "Part Ester" and Part gp III

"Bel-Ray® EXS Full Synthetic Ester 4T Engine Oil is a premium motorcycle oil that uses the finest quality synthetic hydrocarbon and ester base fluids"

I could see possibly using straight 50w oil in a warmer climate like AZ, but I'd like the flexibility of a 20w-50 oil like the VR1 in a climate where riding temps can vary from 30's > 90's.
