let's see. It HAS BEEN doing fine with 25k conventional oci (and its clean according to the OP) so how is a 10k OCI going to be sludge city?

I don't believe for a second this thing has had 25K OCIs.

And I would NEVER do 25k ocis with any oil.

But in dozens of engines that I've seen at work (crown vics, F150-350, Dodge Caravans and Toyota Tundras ) with MANY MANY miles on them never seen any sludge or problem with any thing. And those engines are lucky to see a 7-10k oci... (with any bulk oil)

Just going with what the original poster stated...

Take care, Bill

the last one was 25k.

The truck is driven 150+ miles a day... our store is responsible for delivering to the closer to downtown area and we are the farthest away from the wearhouse. it usually averages around 800+ miles a week or 3000+ miles a month. in 7 months, we've already racked up 21k miles, but on saturdays, we drive more than 150 miles..try around 200.
Theres no reason to call me a lier..

I didn't call you a liar. I'm sure you think the last oil change was 25K ago.

No, i'm sure.
I told the boss, This thing hasn't had an oil change in 25k miles, i think it's time'

ALL repairs go through him and he knows every PSI of air that goes in those tires because it costs him $$$. I've been with This store for almost a year now, i drive this truck, no one else, and maintanence would not be done to it with out me knowing about it.
I change the air filters, i wash it..it's pretty much my truck.
It hasn't been to a shop since i've been with this store.

Just the color of the oil, the way it looks..i know color isn't an indicator of oil life, but it looks terrible, pitch black, nasty.

I believe the other Oil changes were around 4k OCI, but some where along, oil changs just stopped. Probably after the newness wore off.

Even with a high OCI i'd still say MC 5w20. The Escape's we used to have at work would go 10k OCI's and they still ran good at 150k. Those 3.0L's are plentiful and cheap.. I'd plan on replacing it at 200k or 300k even with that abuse.

You say he will give you five cases of 5w40...assuming they are six packs...six times five equals 30QTS...30 times 5 bucks equals $150 dollars...

Did you mean 5QTs of Valvoline 5w40? Otherwise you are makeing out like a bandit!

Myself I wouldn't take responsibility for the truck. The engine has suffered so much abuse it could die next week whether you change the oil or not! And if you have been wrenching on it even if it is not your fault guess where the fingers will point! YOU! Trust me I know humans...
You don't want that truck anyways. Get a truck that hasn't been abused...

I agree with what Bill said - this truck as already been horribly abused with hard driving and a long OCI on 'no-name' 5W-20...and now all of a sudden, you say you don't want to use 5W-20 b/c of the driving it sees......I don't get it - its survived just fine with this regime so far, so why change it?

Seriously, modern 5W-20's are very good oils, and handle police duty on a regular basis with similar conditions...just go with the 5W-20 of your choice, and try to change it more often!

You say that you wash it, change the air filters. It only takes 15 minutes to change the oil, somewhere in the time it takes to wash it and change the air filter you should have time to change the oil real quick at what ever interval you want!

Well ..all the this and that "is what it is".

Do some regular oil changes. Pick a number. 3 months ..4 months ..whatever. Since you're going to buy it cheap, invest in some Auto-Rx with your own money.

If you really intend to buy this truck, I don't see why you would even debate the short term economics of its care. Your boss is going to give you many thousands off of scrap value for the thing. I think that you investing some $$ or time is truly money well spent ..and any tap dancing in avoidance is kinda self defeating. You're 1000's to the good ...even 100's in costs would be sensible.

This whole thread makes no sense.

1) Your boss is too cheap to get the oil changed. But he is willing to give you well over $100 in goods to do a *single* oil change.

2) You rave about how clean the engine is and how well the thing runs with 5w20 for a 25,000 mile OCI. Then in the next breath you refuse to put 5w20 back in it.

3) You ask for advice for what oil to run for a 10k interval. Then: No, I refuse to run synthetic. No, I refuse to run a Pennnzoil product. No, I won't do that either.

Ok, here is my advice even though you don't want it. You are down south and the truck never gets turned off. Run a straight 20 or 30 weight conventional, or a 5w20 or 10w30 synthetic. Pick whatever brand you want. It's been running good on Ashland products, then I'd stick with Valvoline.

I's about to say... if it's run all day, fewer cooldowns=longer oil life (as mentioned above).

This would be a great reason to run a quality straight weight, also stated above. It's only starting cold once/day, and straight weight is more durable.

Bingo. This truck is a prime candidate for Valvoline straight 30.

KieferS do not use sae-30 in this truck , under 50F you will get to much start-up wear. Just use the napa or Valvoline 10w30 all year long. Napa is Valvoline and its done a very good job so far even under severe conditions dont change whats working. No matter what you read on this site Valvoline is one of the best engine lubricants you can buy.

If you are so sure that you will buy this truck, then start treating it like you own it immediately. That means take responsibility for whatever it needs, whether or not your boss will pay for it.

His boss isn't going to use a straight 30 for the only reason of wanting to max out fuel economy. Boss man is gonna hand him the cheapest filter and oil on the shelf and be done with it.
