Thanks
Welcome to BITOG.
My personal opinion: I have to have a big explanation so I don't offend as many people.
Stay away from the Fram Extra guard. A guy here posted a picture of one with 5000 miles on it..
Link While it still looked great, and much better than the cut open Purolators I've recently seen. I am not a fan of the rubber anti drain back valves (ADBV). I feel the same way about the Puro Classic or any other filter with one for that matter. The valve holds the oil in the filter once the engine is off. If you have a vertically mounted filter on the bottom of your engine, its not that huge of a deal. Gravity is your friend in that situation.
I need to blow your theory up a bit my friend. Nitrile rubber ADV's are perfectly ok for OCI's of 6k or less. The rubber stays plenty pliable for that period of time. FRAM has done millions of miles of testing to prove exactly that.
The Fram Tough Guard and Fram Ultra are both good filters with silicon ADBV. The silicon holds up better than rubber. If I didn't have a stash, Id try them both. P1 filters are good minus their tearing issue lately, but I still have one I am wanting to use and experiment with. I am also a fan of WIX filters if you have an Oreillys Auto Parts near you. Very thick cans with silicon ADBV's and a good value IMO. Napa Golds are the same filter, but a few cents more.
Thick cans? FRAM cans do not burst until 250psi is reached, what is the benefit is using more steel? Of course, you could buy a FRAM racing filter, it has a burst strength of 500psi. WIX filters are rated at 25 microns to get 99% efficiency, FRAM is at 20 microns. Kinda why they continue to harp on our construction because they certainly do not want to talk about filtration
The Royal Purple and Mobil 1 filters are both good as well, but twice the cost of a say a WIX..
They are hardly twice the cost of the WIX XP, which is kinda sorta somewhat comparable to the FU or RP or M1 extended life filter. RP and M1 filter is made FRAM to RP and M1 specifications. WIX XP is simply not comparable to FU or RP in capacity though the construction is a direct copy of the RP and FU cartridge (metal screen covered in synthetic media, with the exception of the RP filter having the highest quality media in the industry and the FU having TWO layers of full synthetic media while the WIX XP has a single layer
But they, like the Fram Ultra, are rated for 15,000 miles oil change intervals. Nothing wrong with them, but not worth the $$$ if you aren't planning on using them to their full potential.
When comparing filters, it really helps if you compare "apples to apples" so to speak. FRAM, WIX and other major companies make many different types of filters that are geared to different oil types and change intervals.
1. My Jeep is picky with oil filters and runs quieter on start ups with a silicon ADBV.
2. I like a thicker construction.. So what?
3. WIX XP? I didn't even mention that filter in my 15,000 OCI filters so why bring it up? I used the price comparison to show it wasn't worth buying a RP, FU, M1 etc. for anything less that 15,000 miles.. Like say a conventional run of 5000 miles.
Just trying to help a new guy out by touching all the bases.
