Hey guys,

Just purchaswd a 1998 Nissan Altima with 105k miles (much on highway). It was owned by a friend of mine and he took as good care of it as he knew how (3k or so oil changes at whatever quicklube). Under the valve cover looks great, uses no oil, clean engine.

What would be my best bets for longevity? This will be my wife's car, so extended drains would be great since I won't be in it every day. Synthetic will definitely be my choice, but which brand and viscosity combo do you think will hold up best in this engine (I've read that the ka24de is hard on oil)? Which filter for longevity? By the way, Amsoil is not the answer i'm looking for, I want to keep mass-market availability.

thanks

I've got a KA24DE in my Frontier pickup.

I'm running GC with a Napa Gold 1344 filter.

My 5150 mile UOA was encouraging so I'm shooting for 10,000 miles on this combo right now. UOA

The engine seems to really like the oil. If there is an engine that cries out for an A3 rated oil this is it IMHO. Terry thought the Napa filter did a great job. I have no idea if the Altima would allow this filter to fit but I'm sticking with it.

My wife has a 98 ALtima with 66k. I have been using Pennzoil 5w30 and it is like new inside. The filter must be a popular size. I used to use the Puroltar L14620, but the shelf is always empty when i want one. Now i have to use the only one i can get which is a Fram TG7317 for $5.99 - ouch! The car doesn't use any oil at all between changes.
BTW, the filter is a bear to get to. You need to have the car on ramps of some sort and expect to get an arm full of oil getting it off.

If you do a search of the KA24DE engine in the UOA section, you'll find a bunch of really good reports running Chevron 10W30, and one really great, ahem! shall we say outstanding oua with Havoline 10W30 in an '01 Altima thats been seen in my driveway from time to time.

If you want dino, that oil is a worthy contender.

If you want a mass-market synthetic, it's probably Mobil 1 or GC. If it's M1, I'd stick with 10W30 rather than 5W30. Other Altima drivers I've conversed with report better results with the 10W. GC ought to do well.

One last thing, I use the Wix 51334, not the 51344, as on oversize to the 51356. Gasket specs are identical to the 51356. The 51344 spes are not. FWIW.

The only difference between the 51334 and 51344 gaskets are the thickness.
The 34 is .233" thick and the 44 is .148" thick.
That shouldn't be a problem, espcially when you see some of the gasket diameter mismatches "recommended" on this forum.

The 1344 fits with room to spare on my Frontier's KA24DE. The metal flange extends past the compressed gasket with at least an 1/8th of an inch all around.

The actual filter area of a 1344 is quite a bit larger than a 1334 as well. The 1334 is a case of big can/medium filter element.

I think Purolator discontinued the L14620 filter. I believe it had design issues. It was replaced with the L14610 (PL14610 for the PureOne), which I currently use in my '02 Maxima. The Purolator website recommends the L14610 for the '98 Altima as well.

Can you run the taller 1344 on a 1994-2002 Maxima? The 98-2001 altima calls for the Napa/Wix 1356 as well. Does the 1334 cross reference to the Amsoil SDF 20?

As Roger said the gasket on the stock size 1356 and oversized 1334 match exactly. The cannister of the 1334 and 1344 are identical in diameter but the 1344 and 1334 have differences in gasket thickness as Bill Kapaun identified.

I am currently using a L24458 and have previously used the L20073 filters on a ka24de. The L14459 should also work.
I prefer the proline generic version of the Purolater filter.

For oil, any of the synthetics in a weather matching viscosity should give you the longevity you are looking for. Mobil1/QuakerState/RotellaT are priced well at megalomart and wholesale clubs. Watch for sales at the local autoparts stores since even their generic group3 synths haven't been proven bad.

Because of driving style differences, I don't recommended extended maintenance schedules unless proven with a used oil analysis. That being said, stick with regular oil/filter change intervals.

I've had a '96 & a '01 Maxima. On those VQ30DE engines I believe either the Wix 51356, 51334 or the 51344 (and corresponding NAPA's) will work fine. There seems to be enough clearance on the side mount for any of those three filters, and frankly I suspect the back plate is big enough for the minor gasket differences too. It's just that being the conservative nut I am, I prefere exact gasket matches, even if it isn't always necessary.

I also have an '01 Altima. Unlike the Maxima, that filter is located way up on the back side of the engine with plenty of clearance for just about any oversized replacement.
