Ok I am a little frustrated, but not willing to give up. I have had an issue with consumption for the past few years. I have tried m1 hm, kept getting a check engine light with it. Thought it might have been still burning off causing the check engine light to go off. I changed it to Quaker state. I am still about a quart low after 2k, but I was consider using an old stash of formula shell sm or pennzoil ultra. What do you recommend. I am not wanting to go back to a hm oil because of the zinc possibly causing the light to go off. Let me know your thoughts. I have a 138k, still driving well, but wish the consumption would stop.

Would a lower NOACK help? Would ultra be the best application for my car?

what make, model, and year of car? Honestly, I tried Defy and M1 HM on my wifes van and it didn't slow down the leaks it had. Threw in some Maxlife and problem fixed.

What car? What weight is spec'd ?
I don't think the zinc level is causing an ses light. If it killed the cat or the sensor, the light would not stop with another oil. Its probably random. A quart in 2k is not bad.

So your check engine light went away with QS? Are you sure its not a separate issue. I would stick with high mileage oil and give it time to work, its not overnight, could take a few OCIs.

Try maxlife

Maxlife is highly reguarded, and i have had good luck with pennzoil hm. I really don't think a high mileage oil is any more likely to throw a code. Go to an autozone and get the code read, until you know what code is being thrown, its all a guess.

No leaks, just burn off. I noticed my driving habit are not the best, but I have changed them a bit. M1 hm just seemed to cause the check engine light to go off. That's why I was a little concerned.

Just wondering what kind of car this is. I thought I was the only one who threw a CEL running HM oil (gtx). Twice...VTEC code on my civic. I ran maxlife nextgen for 7500 with no CEL...but no help w/consumption either.

What code exactly is causing the check engine light? Have you checked?

I like RLI's Low Ash series of engine oils for controlling oil consumption with a somewhat reduced risk to emissions equipment. I would definitely check what the actual codes are that your ECU is throwing, though.

420 cat convert/emission code. Vvt engine, still running strong. I thought a lower NOACK might help with burn off. No coolant issues. Oil changed 3-5k. No extened drains, oil is cheaper then an engine. Plus I like to change it.

So, P0420, which is "Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)?"

If it went away when you switched oils, it's reasonable to imagine that it's oil related.

Try Mobil 1 ESP 5w30 or RLI Bio-SynXtra HD 10w30 Low Ash.

That's what I was thinking. I was hoping that switching to ultra with a low NOACK, that it could reduce the burn off. If not I might as well use my stash of formula shell sm 5w30. QS has performed well over 3k, just looking to slow it down a bit.

My F-150 was burning 2 qts/4000 miles with Maxlife 5w30. I switched to Pennzoil HM 5w30, and the consumption decreased to 0.5 qts/4000.

Yes, my evidence is strictly anecdotal, but Pennzoil HM is apparently a very stout oil.

even if your oil burning rate sounds somewhat reasonable, fact is, P0420 is a sign that your cat converter has lost some of it's efficiency due to catalyst poisoning.

IMHO it's a bit too late now unless you want to invest in a replacement cat + downstream O2 sensor, and keep using API SN oil and keep track of the oil burning rate.

Sorry to hear that. Wifey's 04 camry has over 164K on odo and no oil consumption issues so far (doesn't burn a drop of PYB or QState green over the course of 5K oci).

Q.

I don't think it's too late to make a modification. Reality is, as long as it passes inspection I will just continue to monitor the situation. But I havent had a light in over 4k. On the M1, it came on twice with in 2 months. I have been driving it hard with no issues. So I will continue to monitor the situation to see if anything changes.
