My experience with Valvoline Restore and Protect and oil consumption

Two OC
I am updating this thread

2036 miles,
It burned <1/8qt

I added barely anything from a spare qt of the same 0w20 r&p.

I am blown away, I expected some oil burn since it has been regular for the last 3 years. But this is the least it has ever burned from an oc back in april.

I will be using this oil at least for the next 3 ocs.
Two OCs at 6K mi each with R&P in my 2019 Sonata 2.4L. Zero oil consumption each time. Car now has 36K mi. No previous history on consumption prior to 23K mi when I bought the car.

*Conversrly , I have a Kia Seltos 2.0L run on M1 5W30 EP and 5W30 ESP for mostly 4K mile / 6 month OCI (except fir cross country trip twice) that never burned a drop of oil - now with Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W30 I’m getting oil consumption of almost 1 quart over a 4K mile OCI . It’s a well maintained engine , so while there may be some ring cleaning - everything else should be clean .

I have a 2021 hyundai kona 2.0 awd.

It started burning oil in 2022.

It has a history of all top tier brand name synthetics with fram ultra filters, and recently fram ultra synthetic endurance filters, as well as top tier gasoline used almost always.

I had an OC with Valvoline 0w-20 R&P
1700+ miles ago with 0 burn.

For the last 3 years it would consume .5qt-.7qt oil in 1000mi/1600km.

It did not have the recall for the earlier year kona's with piston ring problems it just missed that year deadline by a few months.

I am very impressed with this oil. For me it is not a gimmick. I am still getting 30+mpg in town as I did with the other brands I used. (castrol, pennzoill, quakerstate, royalpurple)
But for the first time in 3 years no oil burn. It didn't meet hyundai warranty because it was less than 1qt/1000mi.

I will be using this oil at least for the recommended 4 oc's and probably longer.

I have been checking the oil every fuel fill up and have a log of it going well over 1000mi/1600km with 0 burn.
Looks like you have found your forever oil with this vehicle.

This is interesting. So far I have been hearing more about how Valvoline Restore and Protect increased the oil consumption in old engines. And here you have the exact opposite experience, in a new car. Looks like this works for you, keep using it!

Btw many GR86 owners opt for 5w30, rather than 0w20 that in suggested in the manual. One of the reasons is the oil consumption. I tracked my car on 0w20, and there was a noticable burn after a single track day (roughly 90min of track driving + 150 miles highway). Tried two different 5w30 oils so far, zero burn with either of them.

My sons 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe with the 2.4L Theta II has/or had a small amount of oil consumption. Car has right at 70K now. Maybe 1/2-3/4 of a quart in a 4,000 mile OCI. Valvoline Restore and Protect (5w30) didn't seem to do much after 3 oil changes (around 12-14K miles on nothing but R&P oil.) Changed the oil a few weeks ago and he has around 1200 miles on it (he had 2X longer trips last couple weeks) with a lot of highway miles. No oil loss. First time in a while. He also hasn't idled very much since the oil change, so that may have something to do with it as well. Anyway, hopefully it's improved for the long hall. I will probably stick with this oil in his car also. It's nice with the $5 rebate!
Other posters have suggested that for Hundai / Kia engines going with five Valvoline Restore and Protect oil changes minimum is recommended to clean up oil ring packs . I use Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W30 in a 2017 Sonata 2.4L Theta II as well as a 2021 Seltos 2.0L Nu engine but are only in their first and second OCI’s of using Valvoline Restore and Protect. Before I had used mostly M1 5W30 EP at up to 4,000 mile OCI’s and suspect that due to a little oil burning in both : All engine internals are clean but believe the ring packs have some carbon issues that Valvoline Restore and Protect should help to clean up . *That could be the use case slogan for many here after using M1 , Pennzoil , Castrol etc. synthetic oils with <5,000 mile OCI’s in that engine internals are clean - except the ring packs have become carboned up and are now sticking resulting in rising oil consumption. No vehicle ever died from slight varnish or mostly clean engine internals - but carboned up and stuck ring packs will diminish engine life . It’s for that reason alone that I will be using Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W30 for at least 5 OCI’s in Hyundai / Kia engines. If I wasn’t using Valvoline Restore and Protect I would go back to M1 0W30 ESP as a best do it all oil for my vehicles . Also available at WM would be M1 5W30 Truck & SUV along with PUP 5W30 I would have no issues using .

Update to this thread

Car is at 31xx miles on the initial oc

It just finally consumed a full qt of ow20 valv r&p, over a period of 5 months.

Up until this most recent oc

It would go through 1/2qt, every 1000 miles.

I am blown away by this oil.

I will prob do the 4 recommended oc's and beyond.

I will update this in another few thousand miles.

This is the log I have kept of the very minimal oil consumption from just 1 oc.
