For anyone who might be interested, AMSOIL just posted their latest round of comparisons of bench testing 10 different oils.

You can find this on the company web site home page, lower right column.

Looks like Exxon-Mobil did their homework on the Mobil 1 Extended Drain.

I commend Amsoil for doing these tests. They at least have the ***** to compare their products against the competition. I will say that I never really thought Amsoil was any better then M1. They are more alike then anything. They share similar chemistries in that they are both PAO based. Those numbers they show will vary showing that M1 is every bit as good as Amsoil.

Jay - why the animosity? Please show me the data from other companies.

If Amsoil were to present the test data that really matters most, such as overall engine wear, the rankings would come out differently.

Please tell us how the results would come out.

1) Amsoil doesn't always thicken, maybe in some people's minds it does, but it's just not true what you write. Also this is the new lower viscosity formulation.

2) HTHS is meaningless if we are talking about Amsoil. Strange. OK.

3) Pennz Plat did good.

4) TBN is TBN. I agree starting TBN is a bit pointless, but a TBN of 12 is not caustic.

5) 4-ball tests really bug some people. It may not correlate to real life - but it is an indicator of long life use. It shows that Mo is not the cure. Interestingly it does show there is some difference between the oil or test technique with the last three oils.

This is the ATM 10w30

Interesting.

Exactly, Buster...and the more Amsoil can chigger the majors with data like this, the more everyone will win. If for no other reason, they deserve kudos on that basis alone for publishing the comparison.

The way I look at Amsoil is this: Boutique or not, their stuff *does* work, and that's why I use it. Sure it costs more, but a few extra bucks don't matter to me. I can order the oil and have it delivered. No running to the auto parts store with coupons, and no battling the hordes at WalMart.

Personally, the more Amsoil can act like a lightning rod enhancing competition, the better -- for all of us.

e anderson,

That was great information on how various 10w30 oils compared in these areas. Do you have any data for 15w40 diesel oil?

Thanks
Ruby

I could live without the 4-ball wear test. Completly useless IMO in comparing motor oil.

*I have always questioned Amsoil's TFOUT #. That test isn't a good example of "real world" conditions most likely.

Is it really fair to compare a $6/qt synthetic oil with $2/qt non-synthetic oils? Wonder why they didn't compare with Redline, Syntec, Royal Purple, Schaeffers, etc.?

Ruby - the information comes from Amsoil.

ATM 10w30 Test

They have not recently studied the 15w40 in such detail. AME Data

Buster - 4-ball wear test is what it is. Ignore it if you like. I always wonder how repeatable it is.

TFOUT seems to be OK with folks if Amsoil doesn't do OK. I'm not so sure how "real world" it is either, though

doyall - Amsoil does compare to Mobil 1. The reason they don't compare to the other oils publicly is competition awareness. Sure us nuts have heard of those oils, maybe a few have heard of Redline and RP - but how many in the public know of Scheafer's and GC?

no not really. i try to stay with the non middle eastern oils. since amsoil was founded by an airforce pilot, why are they using some stuff from mobil now? i kind of liked the idea that an air force pilot took some recipe from jet synthetic oil and made it into a motoroil for cars. now all i see on the internet is amsoil bashing every other oil company.

From what I learned during the last few weeks M1 appears to be the worst Amsoil "enemy" and business competitor…lol Honestly I don't really take very seriously their colorful performance charts and their thousands copy/paste dealer websites. I don't even trust to all Amsoil UOA here on BITOG and guess why...?

From a business perspective, it makes sense for Amsoil to do what they do and compare them to the major players. The others are so small. Amsoil makes great oils, but so do many other oil companies.

I think is weird the Castrol did bad in the thin film test (the first test). Seeing how its supposed to be the best for maximum sludge protection? Also, I see Castrol did better than Chevron Supreme in all but one test. Never would have though that.
