Just checked the oil on my Civic with over 150K on the engine and 2500 on this oil change. I added almost a full quart makeup oil a few weeks ago but that has about 500 miles on it now. The oil color looks like it's straight form the bottle. I could drain it back into the empty quarts and sell it as new! I'm running NAPA syn. It's always amazed me how clean this oil stays until about 5K. Then it gets a darker amber color. Like a good IPA. Right now it looks like Coors Light.

I have noticed Castrol turns black quicker than any other oil. I am not sure if I like that or not.It means its cleaning, but I also dont like leaving black oil in there bothers me and I end up changing it sooner.

You probably haven't tried the right ones. Most of them are average but a select few are very good and my preferred choice. I know what you mean so I gave them a second try.

IPA's are very good. I personally like Dogfishhead 90 minute IPA

Closest I've had to a good IPA was from Greenman in Asheville. I'm a brown ale guy myself. Ol' Chub is my current favorite. Which coincidentally, is what the oil in my wife's BMW looks like every year when I drop it.

Not by much 5 minutes after driving. After sitting for a few hours, I'd probably agree more. When I drain at 5-8K it's still amber. No darker than the dipstick or what shows up on the paper towel I wipe the dipstick with.

Also, I'm truly aghast that moderators didn't reprimand your off-topic IPA discussion. It was simply used as a reference to the oil color and then you all start talking about IPAs. Also, there are MANY good IPAs. Now go back to drinking your light beer that tastes like apple juice and let the real men on this thread discuss oil color

Try an Ol' Chub Scotch Ale and tell me it resembles a light BEER in ANY way. I'm addicted right now.

Nothing wrong with a well-made Weizen or Kölsch either, BTW.

Lol I wasn't going to discuss beer because I don't drink. Never have

Wish I could even have a beer...severe gout flare-ups have led to dietary changes and all I can have is a sip of bourbon now and then....beer has purines in it, as does shrimp, lobster, crab, and anything else that tastes good.

I have several cars that don't darken oil, but the Kia Sportage's oil darkens really quickly, as does the oil in my dad's 2011 Sportage with the 4 cylinder engine. Neither vehicle consumes any between changes, but it looks ugly quickly.

Mineral or synthetic ? I find there is a big difference with Castrol. For me the Edge stays clean looking for a long time, but this was on an engine that had nothing but Edge since I dumped the FF at 1000KM (600 mi).

Older beaters mostly had GTX which turned dark fairly quickly, but the occasional run of Edge in them stayed cleaner a lot longer.
