Hello Bitogers,

I'm seriously considering purchasing a Pontiac G8 GT. It has the beefy 6.0 liter V-8 under the hood. I was curious if anybody here has a G8 GT or at least a GM product that uses the L76 engine. The owners manual calls for 5w30 and the manual states dino oil is fine. Synthetic "they say" is only needed in very cold climates. I would probably switch it over to synthetic after the first OCI but obviously the oil choices are numerous.

Thanks!

+1.

I'd use Valvoline conventional if you decide not to use synthetic. One of the most shear stable conventional oils.

Nice car. I would run a synthetic myself. Stick with the 5w30. Any of the following brands would be a good choice and meet all warranty requirements. I am not a Mobil 1 fan so they are not on my list even though it is FF in the GM performance vehicles...

Penzoil Platinum
Quaker State Horsepower
Valvoline Synpower
Kendall GT1
Amsoil XL

You can't go wrong with Synpower. +3 on Valvoline conventional for non-synthetic use. Advanced has oil change special $16 for 5 quarts of Valvoline conventional and filter.

Dozens of people here use the OLM with full synthetic 5w30, and get excellent results, so you will see plenty more +1 posts.

Also, 0w30 synthetic oil is great stuff too. It works better in the cold, and there is plenty of proof that using it extreme heat is fine too.

The L76 is typical of the others on the LS-X family. They do well with something on the thicker end of the 30wt scale. Expect a good amount of copper on your oil analysis if you do one.

SuperEd...I have the L76 motor in my 2008 Silverado "VortecMax" 6.0...I have ran nothing but Pennzoil Plat 5w30 since the 3,500 mile mark, and now have 24,000 miles on her and plan to do a UOA this summer after some hard towing. A fellow on this forum ran this oil in his LS1 corvette which engine is pretty similar to the L76 and had good results on his UOA. I do expect some high copper still, I was informed that it is pretty typical in these engines due to the cam bearings, but keep your eyes on the UOA section this year for my UOA, and we will see how good this oil does in this engine.
