As part of my continuing effort to give back to the online community. I made a "how to" video. The video is intended to be pretty basic, I imagine this is pretty basic for most readers on this site.

I used my GMC as an example.

I thought I would post it on here for others to share with their non-oil changing friends.

Also, let me know if you have any feedback for improvements or requests for other videos.

My oil filter is in the same type of position (better location though) and doesn't lose any oil when I change it cold; something to try if you want.

Great job. That is exactly how I change oil. And thats my favorite oil filter and oil combo. Looks good. I approve

.

Also this is just me and im a mess maker. I use one of the big silver blitz drip pans under the oil receiver. but I picked up a big roll of the pig absorbent mat from napa a while back for like 12 bucks it was on mega sale. I love the stuff. you could probably suck up a quart of oil with one or two sheets of the stuff. so any splatter gets sucked up. and I use it till the sheets are almost squishy with fluid and oil and then just replace. Its kinda nice!

Thanks

Nice job! I always thought about making videos of various things but when the time comes I either forget or dont have time to track the camera down. Now that I own a house though, instead of having to abide by the "dont even lift the hood" rules of an apartment I might finally be able to post a few.

The only thing I do different is buy my oil and filter at Autozone for the Mobil 1 or Bosch filter deals and instead of slowly turning the filter I just spin it off and make the mess all at once. I have tried the plastic bag trick but the position of the filters on both of my trucks prevent it from actually working. Also most filters now have anti drainback valves so the drips and runs will be there whether the engine is hot or cold. I always change the oil hot as hot oil runs better and suspends any trash, sludge gremlins that may be present.

Better than newspaper under the drain pan is a dog food bag opened up. The bag is coated with plastic or similar to resist moisture. While it works well I would not go as far as to suggest someone get a dog to assure them an ample supply of dog food bags. Also its best to remove the dog food before opening up and using the bag.

I have very recently started to hold the drain pan up right under the drain hole for the first few seconds, then I lower it down slowly to the proper place. Its made my oil changes less messy.

This is an excellent idea I havent thought of before. It seems that no matter where I position the pan, be it in the exact place it worked before, I always seem to get a small mess from splashing. I will do this on my next oc.

I did this for the first time a few months ago. It really helps cut down on the mess. The only problem was that I dropped the drain plug in the drain pan while trying to hold the pan steady steady, so I had to fish it out with a magnet. It is amazing how much time and profanity a magnet can save when working on cars.

I tried holding the drain pan closer to the drain plug, the first time I change the oil myself. When the oil hit the drain pan it flipped out of my hand and landed upside down as the hot oil continued to drain all over the concrete driveway.

It was an Epic Fail, and I swore I wouldn't try that again.

Then you get all that dog food dust all over. I prefer just to use a drain pan, and then throw some oil-dri on the little bit of oil that hits the garage floor.

I have a few drain pans, but my favorites has a screen top for the very purpose of catching the drain plug.
