Oil Change to GC

As I posted already, I just changed my oil the other day in my BMW. I removed Liqui Moly 5W-40 and replaced it with GC 0W-30. The one thing I noticed was the car seems to have a little rougher idle (occasional vibration) and a little more hesitation on light acceleration. Under load and higher revs, the engine seems to run smoother than before.

The engine is not showing any codes and there are no warning lights. I over-checked everything multiple times (drain plug secure, oil cap on, oil filter cap tight, no leaks, etc.). Oil sensor shows oil level is at max and okay.

Has anyone else experienced this when changing from a -40 weight to a -30 weight oil? My car only has around 5200 miles on it. Maybe I'm just being paranoid. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Lighter oil is similar to having a lighter flywheel, less absorption of energy and less of a buffer for vibration.

Think of the difference between a heavy car hitting a bump vs a lighter car, takes more of a bump to upset the heavy car.

Also figure in that the LM may have been covering up the hesitation that's been there the whole time. Pour in a bottle of in the gas tank next time you fill up and run it like a scalded dog.

Could also be cheap gas/winter gas/lower octane than labeled gas. Try a tank of Shell or another top-tier fuel.

But since the car is really new, I'd chalk it up to it being there all along and the thicker weight oil smoothing things out.

My Mother's CR-V has a slightly rough idle, drives my dad nuts, she doesn't notice.

Bp unleashing devastation again.

I ran "gold" GC (not the vintage green stuff) In an Aerio SX 2.3 5M and did not like it but I did not give it a chance to do any cleanup.

Is the oil level "overfull" compared to when you dumped it? Sometimes removing 250ML solve the issues you described. Sometime the lube is just not a good "fit" for an engine.

I only run BP and Shell gas (93 octane) in my car, so I would hope it isn't bad gas. I will try some Chevron anyway and see if that will make a difference. Thanks.

My question had more to do with the oil being lighter more so than anything negative towards GC. I have 14 more quarts of the stuff in my stash, so I would hope not.

My car has no dipstick (thank you BMW), only an electronic oil level sensor. It reads "Full" and "OK". I thought it might be a slight overfill on my part as well, so I did open the oil filter cover and sucked out around 0.2 quarts. The level indicator never changed and the car still runs the same.

5200 miles on the odometer and the oil has been changed twice?

Yep. Breaking in the engine, so I am steadily increasing my oil change intervals. I started ~1500, then ~3700 and the next will be around 7,500 or so (run UOA and TBN then). There is no way I am following the BMW recommended interval of 15,000 miles.

My GTI doesn't seem to be as happy with GC either. It uses a bit between oil changes and it feels more "coarse" in general. Being a lighter weight oil, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised.

I had been taking my car to the dealer for servicing up until the last oil change, and I believe they typically use 5w-40 Castol Edge. I'm currently debating if I want to try that for my next oil change or Mobil 1.

I am beginning to think that. I guess I'll see what happens after I use the Techron treatment.

Lol...Okay well then I wouldn't think anything of it since you have no reliable data on oil X, you've dumped the factory fill, and the engine is still new. Any changes you make are for the sake of change.

Btw..the factory OCI is probably 10k miles. BMW made a change last year.

The factory OCI on my car is still 15,000 miles. The change to 10,000 was for July 2013 and on.

Never underestimate what bad gas can accomplish, even when it's from a place where you've never had problems before. A few years ago, I put a load of 93 octane in my old Audi from a Husky/Mohawk where I've filled for many years. I don't know what the issue was with that load of fuel, but the stupid thing barely idled. I ran it as low as I could without getting panicky, and filled it again, and the problem disappeared less than five minutes later.

My CC with same engine loves GC! Much smoother with GC then with M1, pluse does not eat any oil.

Multiple Japanese vehicles I've had in the past were very happy with GC. Not so much with the German one, ironically. I'll be moving back to a 0w-40 at the next OC, I haven't decided on what but I've been thinking about giving M1 a try. If that doesn't feel good I'll just go back to Castrol Edge, I know the car is happy with it.

Stick to M1 then. I know one thing: I would not put Castrol Edge 5W40 in my engine even if they pay me to do it!
