95 Corolla, 158K miles. I bought it with 152K and drove it 3k before changing the oil. It did not use any oil (or very little)in the first 3k that I have owned it, but I changed it at 3k with Mobil 1 10W30 and it's used about half a quart in the last 3k miles. Should I try a high milage formula? Auto RX?

Half quart used in 3000 miles is not much at all. You could change but if that's all it is burning I would say your fine with the mobil.

My Saturn burns a bit of oil but I find that it varies a lot with the driving conditions. It burns more on longer trips in higher temperatures. Short trips in cool weather it hardly burns any. Auto-rx might be a good idea anyway. I'm almost finished my first clean phase. A high mileage oil might be an idea too.

My vote is switch to Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w30. They claim excellent cleaning ability. Try this before auto-rx. China Mart has it in 5 quart jug. Wear number on UOA here have been very promising.

I'm running Auto-Rx on 3 vehicle now and I'm sure it does work. Just acquired a 98 Civic with 109k miles and I will be running Mobil 1 HM next spring.

I had a 97 civic with the typical stock d16Y motor. My wife had it new and used dino oil for the all of its life 68,000km with NO oil consumption whatsoever. I changed from dino to Amsoil series 2000 5w30 and I consumed 1L of oil in 2 weeks!!!!! I toped it up and its been fine ever since. I later changed the oil after 5000km with series 2000 again and the engine's oil level remained the same without any consumption whatsoever.

Before jumping the gun just see oil consumption after a couple oil changes.

For some unknown reason, the first oil change to a different brand often results in some consumption. I say stick with the Mobil 1 for another oil change.

Alanu - That's really odd. I switched to Amsoil after the car was run on conventional for almost 13 years (130k miles) and I didn't experience any consumption at all... That was with my Honda B18B1 motor... The only variable I can think of was when I ran Auto-RX once before switching to it.

Trust me thats odd and more of a shock!!

All my years of being an autotech I was quite suprised to see this especially on my personal car. The 97 civic had 5000-6000 OCI with dino so I was suprised to see that massive oil consumption.

I sold that car to my friend and the vehicle only has about 110,000km now and no consumption is present.

I've read about this same scenario many times on this board. I guy will buy a high mileage car and start running Mobil 1 5w30 or 10w30 in the engine. For some strange unexplained reason, that Mobil 1 acts like a much thinner oil than it is. With a 152,000 miles on the clock, and a well broken in engine with increased clearances, you need a thicker oil; or at least something that acts like a thicker oil. I doubt very much that you would've had the same amount of consumption with Maxlife 10w30.

I have been using synthetic in all my cars for the past 12 years. I have not had any issues with leaks when my vehicles reached high miles. Of course, they were using synthetic from day one, or as soon as i could get the factory oil out. Usually around 300 miles.

I've had good luck with Mobil1 in high mileage engines and they've never leaked anymore than they did before...

But don't bother with pricey synthetics with a 3KOCI...

Try Mobil1 High Mileage if you want to keep using it, but I'd go a minimum of 5K, and probably longer (especially if you're topping-off a whopping .5 qt. every 3K IMHO)...

Or switch to MaxLife, which will do just as well...

I've run my '03 Avalanche (5.3l) almost exclusively on Havoline Dino for 113,000 miles (OCI per OLM) with no detecable oil consumption.
EXCEPT for the two OCI's I tried Mobil 1, both time consumed a quart in a 8,000+ (per OLM) OCI. I swapped right back to Havoline Dino - no more Oil Concumption...
