Hello, I have a 2014 Scion xB that is coming up on 10k mi. I drive 50ish mi a day round trip for my commute. I drive a little more spirited than most so I want a good oil that will handle the abuse. I have used Mobil 1 in all of my LS engines before, but this revs a little higher and runs a little hotter.

So here are the quick specks:

1. 2014 Scion xB 2AZ-FE w/ 5spd
2. The owner's manual says -- ILSAC GF-5, Viscosity: SAE 5W-20 or 0W-20 @ 5k mi interval
3. Phoenix, AZ
4. Drive it like I stole it
5. Daily drive is 4mi city streets 50mi highway
6. Mods: full exhaust system, CAI and tune (runs a touch better than most)

Preferences -- synthetic, store-bought, 5k between oil changes, I would like a suggestion on filter too.

Castrol 0w20 and a Fram tough guard for the better filtration at a good price, if you don't care about the better filtration Fram Extra guard, O'Rielly microgard, Carquest filters, or any other filter would be great! Just avoid the known tearolator era purolators.

I wouldn't waste a Fram ultra on anything under 10k miles worth of use.

Other great oils I would look at are Mobil 0w20 with rebate and pennzoil or quakerstate 0w20 with rebate.

Hmm, at a 5k OCI I'm not sure I'd feel pressured into synthetic. On sale, sure; but otherwise I'd be tempted to just get a decent dino. I'd feel dirty tossing good snyth every 5k.

On a 5k change I think most any filter would work. No need for long life anything here.

If you drive it hard and live that far south, I would be tempted to bump up to a 30 weight. Not that it's necessary but I know I'd be tempted. The more I read about VVT and what Toyota recommends outside of NA, the more I think 0W20 is not an absolute requirement.

Moil 1 AFE has a rebate for this month. $12 off a 5qt jug, gets it down to like $13/5qt. Buy two. Maybe it'll go on rebate again in the near future.

What does the owners manual recommend spec. wise? /Look for an oil that meets the specs and use it. Todays oils are that good. Oil filter,it really doesn't matter OEM will do .

Based on my experience with various Camry years I believe the Toyota OEM filters are good, but at typical high stealer prices. One would expect the Toyota OEM filters to be a good compromise between flow and filtration. I've had them apart and they are well made. The Framboys can bash any filter day and night
but I doubt a car maker with a reputation for quality would specify a substandard filter. My experience with OEM Toyota parts is they are over priced but good quality. Perhaps because of the quality they are less overpriced than they seem.

Napa has PP on sale for $5.29/qt, and there is a rebate of $2/qt, bringing it down to $3.29 after rebate. While you're there, pick up a Napa Gold filter.

O'Reilly has Magnatec and Wix on sale for $25.99

Another option is the Smitty's oil if you're near a Kmart. Only $2/qt. Then, go to Carquest or AAP and pick up a Carquest Red filter.

Agree with this entire post.

I will hop on the bandwagon of Synthetic is not required for a 5k OCI. If warranty allows go at least 7500 on a synthetic if that is what you prefer to use.

When my (only a 1.5) xB was new, it got a steady diet of Mobil Clean (now Super) 5000, every 5000 miles. It must have liked it, because it's now at 76K, and HAS NEVER NEEDED OIL BETWEEN CHANGES! Which are now M1 EP every 10k-and it never moves off the full mark!

Can't see the advantage of a syn oil for a 5,000 mile oil change interval with your driving style and miles per trip.

Since you prefer synthetic at 5,000 mile intervals, there's no reason to not use a cheaper synthetic.

I vote for Quaker State Ultimate Durability or Walmart SuperTech Synthetic in 5W-20. Couple with a FRAM Tough Guard.
