Wow, I didn't expect to see Castrol GTX so high on the list. Makes me wonder if I wouldn't be better just using that with a pure one filter since they are so inexpensive.
Advance Auto has a sale on Mobil 1. 5 quarts and a Mobil 1 filter for $30. This has my name all over it. Should I stick with the 5W30 the manual reccomends or go to the 0W40?
Both will work well in this engine, especially if not driven hard. I would personally favour the M1 0W40 myself, which is a great oil. Your climate is generally a warmer one, so no issues with the 40 weight. The VQ does list both 30 and 40 weight choices in the manual, so both are equally fine under the right circumstances.
The OEM filters are made in China, so I'd avoid them. Possibly it makes no difference in the grand scheme of things, but who knows for sure and why take the gamble?

Will you go for the $15 rebate?
Yeah now that I know about it

I've got a pure one filter to go on.

I also have a question for you. The manual says it takes 4.5 quarts of oil to fill. Over on the oil filter page I asked a question about the filter and someone suggested that it takes 5 quarts. How much do you use?
My manual says 4.5 also, but it takes 5 quarts to bring it to the full mark.
I just changed mine and it took the whole 5 quarts to show on the full mark. Hopefully that extra .5 over the manual won't hurt it.
I have an 08 Altima 3.5 SE, just changed my oil with PP 5w30 & Napa gold filter. BTW it did take 5 qts total which makes it very easy with the 5 qt jugs by not having any oil leftover.
I'll turn over 100K miles by Thanksgiving this year in my wife's daily driver Infiniti G35 with the same VQ engine. It's had Pennzoil Yellow Bottle every 4K and regular Purolator oil and air filters since the day it was born. Nothing but tires and brakes so far, and transmission fluid drain and fills every 30K with Nissan Matic S (formerly Matic J).
AA has coincidentally had PYB and Purolator OC specials the last 4 times I've been due. I haven't spent more than $16 for an OC in over a year on this car - can't beat that!

FIL 1365? is there a larger one?
I can't recall the part number, but the filter for the previous generation VQ engine (VQ30DE 3.0L) is larger, and fits on the VQ35. That is the filter I used to run on my 3.5L.
