I can understand the meaning behind such oil names as GTX, or Platinum, or SynPower, or Clean 5000. But names such as Rotella T, Delvac, and Delo leave me scratching my noggin. Is there a story behind these oddball names? Are there some other unique oil names that you can think of?

DELVAC - 'Diesel Engine, Lubricant, Vacumn'...or SOMETHING like that.

DELO - 'Diesel Engine Lubricating Oil'

'ROTELLA' - don't know, but it is a similar idea to the above.

I find it funny that you say you understand the meaning behind 'GTX'...never really understood that one!

:P

To me, GTX means "grand touring extra". I have no idea what it means to Castrol.

Rotella T sounds like the name of a dinosaur.

And the Lubro-Moly oil I had analyzed several years ago- good euro high-tech full synthetic 5w40- had *NO* moly!

I'd have to have a whole lot of wine before I'd equate wine with a decapitated canine. . .

Mr. Williams decided to name the company Royal Purple since historically, royalty used the color purple for only the finest of fabrics because it was so expensive to produce. Mr. Williams’ hope was that the color’s association with quality would symbolize the quality in all of Royal Purple’s lubricants.

Whatever happened to the such and such "Turbo" oils? I guess that was the hottest 1980`s advertising phrase,"Turbo Approved" :^P

That fits. In the early 20th century, Standard Oil was declared a monopoly and broken up by the government, much to the disappointment of Tempest's grandfather.

One of the spin offs was SOCONY, Standard Oil Company of New York.

Later, SOCONY merged with Vacuum Oil and became SOCONY-Vacuum which eventully became Mobil Oil. I believe the DELVAC names goes back to the SOCONY-Vacuum days, so Diesel Engine Lubricant VACuum fits.

Interesting. Do you happen to know the origins of "Rotella T" ?
