Obesity

Our soil is depleted, our water is compromised with pesticides, herbicides and pharmaceuticals. Our air is clean fortunately, thanks to de-industrialization. You go to buy leafy vegetables and they have never seen sunlight in the hydroponic existence while everything else has been harvested unripe and ripened in a warehouse.

Prognosis negative...
Highly regional really.

That said I believe almost nothing from any entity selling/telling me something - with the premise it is safe to ingest any substance. I mean they may even not be lying at the time. It's just at the that point in time maybe no one knows. From that level it just goes downhill to some very inefficient protector even being in on it. I hardly trust "organic" labeling. I kinda trust the local person at the farmers market telling me they don't spray, with anything.

My mind and body were duped by the food pyramid.

I am going to post a link below to a local farm in my area that I source meat from. My intent is not to promote them per se but rather to use them as an example of what to look for. Mind you that I have actually been on their farm and inspected their land as well as their animals, not to mention having consumed a wide variety of what they produce since. I can say with confidence this is one of the best examples I have found in terms of regenerative farming and raising animals in a holistic manner using high quality hearding and feeding techniques.

The meat and organs I have eaten from these animals are THE BEST I have ever had, period. This is a trend that I want to support in hopes that it continues to grow nationwide and worldwide.

Sounds all well and good but the average person is not going to pay $15.00 dollars a pound for ground hamburger nor do you have to live a healthy lean lifestyle.

I've heard it said that wellness is cheaper than illness. To each his own but I've seen enough in my lifetime in terms of how poor eating has affected the masses to the tune of an epidemic of health maladies and a general calamity in terms of the reduction of the quality of life for those who suffer.

If you want to kick the can down the road and save a few pennies now you can be like my parents and their generation who are paying the price near the end of their lives. Oh well...

A stat from a few years ago - I don't remember the source, so take it with a grain of salt. I'm not sure I've got the years correct either. As well, remember that correlation does not always equal causation. But anyway, I found it interesting!

In 1940, Americans spent 5% of their income on medical care, and 15% on food.

By 2000, those numbers had flipped - 5% for food, and 15% for medical care.

Everything in moderation.

Even though I'll pound down a pint of ice cream in one sitting anyways.

Everything in moderation.

Generic catch phrase sentiment used to rationalize and justify practically anything.

Getting back to my original point, when most if not all available choices are bad or perhaps any good choice is too difficult or inconvenient to deem acceptable "moderation" becomes irrelevant.

It’s convenient to want to blame others but it is the shoppers fault I shop at many grocery stores offering many items. I can get the items I need to live a healthy lifestyle and I do, do I see most shoppers making correct decisions no most buy garbage not because they have to it’s because they want to. People seriously have to placing blame on others when it’s your own dang fault you’re unhealthy and out of shape. Same people eating the garbage because they WANT to are the same people that don’t do second of exercise in their lives and that is free if you want it to be.

Don't completely rule out genetics. I'm 65 and have fought the weight battle all my life, some years more successfully than others. One of my sons drew the short straw and is a mini-me and will be fighting his whole life to maintain a reasonable weight, while my other son can eat whatever he darn well pleases and be skinny. My daughter was blessed with her mother's genes, so will not have this fight in her life, either.

Culture and big business in the US plays a role in the battle for a healthy lifestyle. I just got back from London where this older man averaged 20,000 steps per day with three days almost 30,000 and one 33,000 steps. The BMI calculator puts me at the low end of the obese category.

While London is big, it's still very walkable. The food is much healthier. Even raw eggs are not processed like in the US and are not refrigerated in stores. Heinz baked beans are 150 calories per serving in the US, but in the UK, Heinz baked beans are 100 calories per serving. Why? Sugar content. It's addictive and highly profitable for businesses. Regulations need to change in the US for our future generations to even have a chance.

Sorry about the poor cell phone picture. Taken from the 40th floor before sunrise from a restaurant called the Duck & Waffle.

Why are you eating baked beans and especially store bought they belong in the trash.

Thank you for being judgmental. Beans have high protein content at a reasonable price. I typically make my own because I can control the sugar content, but realize the tradeoff of beans are their higher carb content.
You can get much better protein content from lean meats and fish without any carbs again its about making proper choices

My wife and I are blessed to have good jobs where we can afford to buy quality, healthy foods, including a lot of fish and fresh vegetables. It borders on being criminal how healthy eating in the US is out of financial reach for many. The cost of fresh fruits and vegetables, even in London, is half or less than the same in the US. Fresh orange juice with no added anything, especially sugar, is the norm. The choices are with or without pulp, not added sugar and preservatives.

Why can't/won't the US do the same, making healthy eating affordable? We know why.

Most people do not want to go to the extent of counting calories or macros. Baked beans fulfill a basic need.
Most people don't know what a serving size is and over eat by 2to 3 times the amount and wonder why I'm overweight
If you don't know the basic calorie needs or macros you'll always be in trouble and most people are.

If the produce looks perfect, it's likely sprayed. It can be nearly perfect but necer totally. Usually smaller too

Our results indicate that adipose tissue LA (Linoleic acid) has increased by 136% over the last half century and that this increase is highly correlated with an increase in dietary LA intake over the same period of time.

The base chemical makeup of people is being altered almost in real time by food we are not designed to eat. Margarine over Butter?

Combine this with readily available foods that are intentionally addictive and it's no real surprise.

I went full Keto / intermittent fasting about 6 years ago and lost about 40 lbs of weight in about a years time. Have been less strict the last couple of years (still low carb) and put about 10lbs back on. Need to get back into the gym more often to burn it off.

One theory I buy into is that hunger is driven by need for protein. Your body will stay hungry until it gets the protein it wants as there is no efficient storage in the body (only muscle). Donuts and Oreos don't have much of that most important macro so there is no chemical signal to stop.
