The current model is pretty neat. I seem to recall that it's a Duramax-powered Kodiak chassis. I also remember reading a story about a Secret Service employee that filled one of them with gasoline while overseas. Ha.

I wonder what oil they use...

Dollar Store brand that they pay 100 bucks a quart for.

City Star or Orbitz of course.

As unlikely as it may be, I'd love to see them commission Tesla motors for the new rig!

The Secret Service is definitely a "maximum preparedness" organization.

It's interesting that they're commissioning a new one already, though. Somebody must have come out with a better anti-tank missile that they now feel the need to prepare against.

I know the current one is built on a medium-duty truck chassis but I've wondered about the powerplant ever since it came out that Obama requested a hybrid limo and they told him no, it would be too slow. Presumably there's some serious horsepower going on under there, and lots of other things that would make James Bond jealous.

They should just get a custom Guard S600 LWB like 97% of the other governments of the world do.

Mercedes is capable of building a Guard model to any specification.

We go a bit overboard with security in this country, that car is silly. In the rest of the world even countries that actually have people with RPG's that shoot like Russia they just have a few Guard Mercedes and a bunch of SUV's as escort. Putin runs in a convoy and changes cars, so they don't know which one to pop.

Mercedes has been building positive pressure radioactive/bio, RPG, IED, bullet resistant cars for everyone from tin pot African dictators to the Pope for decades and they have been tested!

I wonder what is best from a tactical point of view. A limo built like an armored bunker or a more nimble sedan with quicker acceleration and maneuverability?

What is wrong with the current model in use now? Is it worn out?

They say it's supposed to resemble a 2009 Cadillac DTS which is no longer in production.

So what? Does it have to resemble a current production model?

What a serious waste of taxpayer money.

$300,000 is nothing, come on now.

The Cash-For-Clunkers program finally caught up to it.

Does it matter? It probably spends half its life idling, and the other half WOT trying to get out of its own way... And then racks up 10k and the motor is probably preventatively replaced. If not sooner.

The current one doesn't have enough ground clearance, remember when it high-centered, and the wheels popped up into the wheel wells? (probably a protection circuit that got tripped, thinking the car was hit from below)

Tactical? I'd say the bunker. I mean, there is no hiding this convoy, and the nature of the job requires hobnobbing and cruising slowly so as to show off power. If someone was going to take off pot shots with an RPG there would be no evasive maneuvers as there would be no warning. It would take a pretty big roadblock to hem these guys in (and they likely have every possible escape route figured out ahead of time, with lots of vehicles to ram things).
