Seems like a lot of my life goes like this. My car was 1 quart low so I added a quart. Drove to work and home and checked the oil. No dipstick, one of those fancy electronic things. It was over filled. Crap. And it is 13 degrees outside.

Decided to loosen the drain plug to get a little oil out and it started dripping out. Not fast enough so I unloosened it a bit more and...

Bolt fell into the oil pan. Put my finger in the hole. Moved the collection pan. Reached in with my other hand and grabbed the bolt. Tried to put it back in. Eventually got it in after spilling oil everywhere. Filled it backup with 3 quarts from a 5 quart bottle of Mobil 1. Took the oil in the pan and poured into the empty Mobil 1 container so I could estimate how much to put back in. And at the bottom of the pan was the crush washer...

Defeated I went inside and kicked the dog and blamed my wife and kids.

Which leads to my question. OCI on the car is 10k or 12 months. Being a good BITOG member I change it at 6-7k miles. I'm at 5k miles now. Can I just drain it all and put in new oil and just leave the filter? Reason I ask is I can get the oil at Walmart but no filter. Have to order one on line and wait a few days. I'm thinking that would be OK.

Leaving the filter on a couple of shortened OCIs is no problem at all.

Universe exists to kick you in the cods to make sure you realise who is really in charge.

(for those unfamiliar with Oz/British slang, "cods" refers to the contents of One's "codpiece")

That is certainly grounds for divorce. LOL!

Regarding the oil, it is about half new now so it could probably go another 5k with no problem (with the same filter). Can you pull the plug and put a finger in the hole again, and then reinstall the bolt and washer? It seems like this could be done in a few min whereas going to walmart could take a lot longer.

Not to be sarcastic, but it goes back to that saying... "Measure twice, [pour] once."

Me? I'd pour what fell in the pan back in. If you're still short, add some old oil or cheap fresh oil. Get a correct filter asap, then change the oil and filter. 5k on Ohio winter oil? Yeah, I'd have no issues dumping it for fresh oil.

On our GM cars , the drain plug / washer is pretty cheap . I have a spare ( several spare washers ) for each car . Have a spare ready in case you drop it , in the oil , again .

This is why I try to be very conservative and get ahead in life. Because sometimes you just have to throw in the towel and say "screw it" and walk away. As long as I'm ahead most of the time I can have a loss or two and still be ahead.

If it was me, I'd just do a full oil change and call it a day.

If you do 5k OCI's but the book calls for 10k then I wouldn't worry about running the filter to the factory specified interval. But I'd buy a couple of filters to have the shelf for next time, along with crush washers. Last few times I bought filters I would buy 10 OEM's from Amazon (Ebay has offers too) and usually they come with crush washers--you might look into that.

Thanks. Going to go to Walmart. Drain, replace washer. Fill with new oil.

Currently ordering 10 filters. Will hold off as long as I can to do a full change.

My daughter and her boyfriend were taking a long trip in his parents VW Tourag (gas engine). I decided to check the oil before he left and found no dipstick (one of those electronic oil checking systems). I realized that it would be impossible to check that new oil was installed after an oil change. I hope that 'technology' doesn't become the norm.....it's part of the further DUMBING down of humanity...IMO....

Toe rag? That's funny, I have to remember that one.

I know this is no help, but I would have left well enough alone at this point. It couldn't have been over by much ...

I wouldn't own a car without a dip stick. Sell the car! Problem solved.

Well I'm just going to sit down and kick my feet up on this one. Most everyone on here knows why too. ...The OP and I would get along like two best friends. We could even combine our bad luck

Agreed.

My kick received was the one time I did not verify the used XG16 gasket stayed in the groove …
Area looked like SH's troops severed a wellhead right there …

I agree. A lot of cars come with that fancy electronic stuff - I suppose for people who don't know how to open the hood.

It's becoming hard to find a new car with 3 things that are important to me - a manual transmission, a dip stick, and a spare tire.

I never understood why people would crack the drain plug when your car is only slightly overfilled, seems like more effort than it is worth. Then again my car leaks/burns enough oil that overfilling might be a good thing.

Members who are that OCD should really get a vacuum extractor. You could even plumb in a graduated cylinder so you can measure the amount that comes out!

+1

If I crack open the drain plug all the oil is coming out. Not worth the hassle/mess to save $5.

My BMW has an electronic dipstick. It annoys me there isn't an actual dipstick, but I can check the oil while driving.

If you kicked an innocent dog over something this minor, and your own mistakes at that, you seem like the type of guy that deserves to have bad things happen to him.
