Nissan pulls the plug on the under-$30,000 LEAF EV for 2026

Seems like a smart move by Nissan, just like Honda.
Why produce a vehicle with a poor return on investment (if any return) in the USA market segment that contracted THIRTY SIX PERCENT IN THE LAST 12 MONTHS? (negative 36% growth) Think about that a second, a brand new segment (EVs) that went backwards in growth once the US Taxpayer stopped giving people $7,500 for a down payment on these things.

It's fine... just get the new Bolt :)

Hmm, yes, buy a new vehicle that is already EOL before its even out the door... 🤔

But there’s a catch. Just like last time, GM has other designs on the Bolt’s assembly plant—now in Fairfax, Kansas. That factory will churn out Bolts for just 18 months; next year production ends and the automaker repurposes the site to build gasoline-powered Buick Envisions and Chevy Equinoxes. Chevy told us that it expects there will be sufficient Bolts to stock dealerships for the next two years, but after that, it’s done.

Does the new iPhone cost $27,600?

Apple will keep making the iPhone, the same will not happen for the "current" Bolt.
GM will keep making cars? They're still going to have to stand behind their warranty? They discontinued the Volt and yet there are still people with remaining battery warranty and GM is buying back the cars because they don't want to spend the money to replace the batteries. Would it be awesome if they had new or rebuilt batteries available for 10 year old cars? Sure, but it's just the way the world works.

I guess no one actually read the article. I do hate when people post stuff without a summary. I thought that wasn't allowed.

Anyway - summary - Leaf is still available. There was supposed to be a yet cheaper version of the leaf that will not be available.

"
Nissan updated the iconic electric hatch with a taller, more SUV-like design, longer driving range, and a built-in NACS port for charging at Tesla Superchargers.

The 2026 Nissan LEAF S+ starts at $29,990. With the destination fee, it’s still just $31,485,"

This entire thread is click bait.

Huh?
I can’t get access to the story in the OP as they want my email address in order to do so. I thought I read it previously so I went back to look, but I can’t view it.

The bottom line no matter what is written in that article is the leaf S was supposed to come out with the price point of $25,000
I believe it was going to have a smaller battery

That is no longer the case and the leaf S model will only be offered in the $30,000 price range

“Nissan announced it will not produce the planned $25,000 S‑level trim of the 2026 Leaf, shifting the base price to just under $30,000 as the company says market trends and buyer preferences led it to focus on higher‑priced models”

Anyway, the OP is correct as far as the title. Nissan pulled the plug. The story that I can’t read might be written wrong by the writer though.

The title of this thread tends to portray that Nissan pulled the plug on the Leaf EV. That is untrue. Nissan pulled the plug on a cheaper trim level that was never actually offered.

A accurate title would be something like "Nissan pulls the plug on a cheaper model Leaf", or "Nissan is not going to offer a lower S level Leaf Trim".

All current Leaf models that were available for sale yesterday, are still being built for sale today.

People would need to be intimately familiar with Leaf pricing and what had been previously announced to know the $30K number was anything more than an adjective. Click bait.

One of my favorite things about the internet is nobody reading the article lol. It’s the best when even the reposter doesn’t read it themselves. Just slinging headlines for upvotes.

Sounds like they cancelled a marketing miscalculation before it actually happened. $30k isnt cheap in my book.

BYD has the Dophin in Mexico for $20k. Simple math there folks.
Cheap Chinese and Mexican labor allow for cheap vehicles. Plus the Mexican market doesn't have the crash regulations that the USA and Canada have.

There are a lot of financial problems with Nissan and maybe also with Honda as well. They both bit off more than they can swallow.

There is no market for a $30k still profitable cheap EV (subsidies is likely going to go away)that had a bad 10 year of past reputation from a company with bad CVT reputation. They need to do something that improves their own overall quality instead for the moment. Pulling the plug on Leaf is the right thing to do, and if they want to maybe focus on an EV or hybrid version of Versa instead for now. At least until they fix their CVT reputation.

Chinese is not the problem, high oil price with the uncertain Middle East situation, uncertain inflation, uncertain interest rate, etc would be. They should have taken Honda's offer to merge with them back then but now that ship has sailed, Honda dodged a bullet.

More people not reading the actual post. Leaf is going nowhere. Only one trim that never existed, now will not exist - in USA at least.

Honda is in just as much hurt as Nissan and both have to do with China market. Honda way over-played there hand, because now they get to compete with Nissan to see which Japanese automaker survives. Possibly not both. We shall see.

Nissan fixed CVT in 2020. Yes, it needed fixing. Meanwhile Honda still declines. 🤷‍♂️
