Newer recommendation for oil for Kia Stinger?

I was using Motul 8100 Power (previously Motul Sport) 5w40 for daily + occasional track use (3-5 days a year). Then it was basically out-of-stock or $80+/jug, AND they shipped me the wrong one (0w20 instead of 5w40) the last time and I didn't notice until after I had drained the car (I just saw it was a Motul bottle, assumed it was the right grade). I used it, half a jug of 5w40, half 0w20, just a couple of long road trips and basic commute, and changed it at like 2K miles.

Did a bunch of research a month ago, found Quaker State Euro 5w40 discussions on here and found it for $23.50 at Walmart and used that and thought about switching my wife's '16 GTI to it as well (have been using Castrol EDGE) - and now its totally unavailable from Walmart (where I ordered it) and amazon doesn't have it either. Autozone claims it has some for $32+ / jug, but if I'm paying that much, might as well go Mobil I or something? And today I see Motul is back down to $62.50/jug.

The Stinger needs SL+, GF-3+, A3+ and 5w30/10w30, per the manual. I just spent like 10-15 hours doing the Quaker State research last month and I'm all researched out and can't seem to find the previous threads anymore.

Is there any remaining oil under $30/jug that works for the GTI AND the Stinger and can handle a few track days? GTI just gets driven to work and back, never even gets into sport mode (wife's car). Some variant of Mobil I - is it the ESP that's the really good stuff? Which grade? Sorry, but there seem to be like 5 varieties of Mobil 1 now, and I can't keep them all straight.. Castrol EDGE Euro 0w30? That seems to be a "good" version, better than 5w40, etc? Or go back to Motul for $60/jug because it's much better? Valvoline 5w40 isn't as highly regarded, but seems to have all the certifications? The hardest part is that, for example, Castrol 5w30 is "ok oil" and 0w30 is "really good" and that seems to be the same across every brand. Is there a database / list somewhere?

Sorry for all the rambling. I guess I'm just trying to avoid spending $35+/jug on known bad/cheap oil. As you can see, I've spent $60+ on better oil for the Stinger, which probably has less stringent requirements than the VW (early on, I used Costco 5w30 and changed it after every 1-2 track days). Also thought about HPL, but feels like a lot more hoops and still quite expensive.

Motul 5w40 X-Cess is $52 a jug at FCPEuro, and if you manage to organise the whole used oil return scheme with them - it will be considerably less.

I'm partial to Motul, but if you're looking for better availability (like Walmart level availability) - can't go wrong with Mobil 1 Euro. If you can deal with shipping - Amsoil is the thing.

Also, keep the jugs in perspective. A Walmart jug is 5 quarts, a Motul jug is 5 liters (5.3qts), An Amsoil jug is a gallon.

Unfortunately, FCPEuro doesn't do Kia.. So I'm not sure they would buy me changing the oil in the GTI 4-6 times a year and reporting 6K of driving.. Recently I've been doing 12-15K in the Stinger..

What do you mean doesn't do Kia. You can select the oil you want without selecting a car. For oil returns, four returns will be absolutely ok, and they won't ask you what engine the oil went into nor how many miles you did on it. You can always put a German car on file for peace of mind in your profile.

The one thing they'll deny is if they think you're a professional doing oil changes for others.

I see. First thing I see on their website is "select a car", and it doesn't list anything non-european.

Yep, it's very confusing. Here:

Once you get all the results - make sure you filter on the left: Engine > Oil and oil filter kits > oil.

Or whatever allows you to filter the kits out and list just the oil. Otherwise you get plenty of pre-assembled kits with filters that you don't care about.

Also, if you are patient, the Quaker State Euro 5w-40 will come back online at WalMart.com if history is any measure. It goes out of stock a couple times a year for a month, possibly two, then comes right back. One reason to stock up a little. I always buy on deals and keep about two oil changes worth for each car at all times, so I don't have to panic buy.

Mobil 1 Euro FS 0w-40 is a great option as suggested above.

Pennzoil Euro 5w40, Mobil 1 Full Synthetic or Mobil 1 ESP and grade.

Yep I saw it out of stock recently.

Showing back in stock for me now.

You gave me hope. Checked today, and it's still showing OOS for me. With no nearby locations carrying it.
Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 0w40 is used a lot on track. Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W40 also good option. Pennzoil Platinum Euro will have really high HTHS for thin 40.
Quaker State is sometimes listed as same as Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5w40 sometimes not. I would go Pennzoil Platinum Euro if going SOPUS product.
For GTI, Mobil 1 ESP 0W30.

Thanks Edy. What's the difference between plain "FS" and "ESP" for Mobil I? IIRC, the GTI is happier with a 40, like 5W40 or even 0w40.. So couldn't I just do Mobil 1 0W40 FS or 0W40 Euro for both? I'd like to have at least 2 cars share the same oil, so I'm not always storing leftovers from 3 different types of oil (I have 2 other vehicles sharing Supertech 5w30 - '10 Legacy 2.5i and '15 FCA minivan with Pentastar 3.6).

I do have a bit of a history of avoiding Mobil I because on my Subaru EJ ('05 Legacy GT), Mobil I 5w30 had a quart of use in 2-3K miles, and I switched to PP 5w30 and it barely ever used oil again. To me that was indicative of a "weak" oil - getting burnt up at the same temps that PP had no issues with. So I've stayed away from it ever since.

Seems like a LOT of oils are jumping over $6/qt around here. I guess it's inevitable.. Mobil 1 and Quaker State (outside of supertech) were the only ones still really good and cheap. Pennzoil Platinum Euro is $7.50/qt and up anywhere I look. I bought the Quaker State for under $5/qt. And yes, I've spent $13/qt for Motul 8100 Power, but that's a bit different.

Man, trying to decide on an oil is almost worse than picking a car in the first place..
:)

ESP is lower sulfated ash and phosphorus (SAPS). It is designed to protect emission equipment like DPF and GPF.
ESP 0W30 is really stout oil. There are numerous topics here and I posted detailed analysis from oil.ru.
What you need is HTHS not grade. HTHS is what matters, especially on track. It is dynamic viscosity measured at 105c (302f). You can google more details.
You don’t want to go crazy on it. 3.5mPas to 4mPas is kind of IMO golden spot for performance, turbo engines. Higher HTHS, more resistance, turbo spooling slower. However, HTHS is key to protection and less wear.
So, on track IMO, go with oil that has Porsche A40 approval (Mobil 1 0W40 and Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W40 have it). That approval has specific track requirements.
Since you don’t track GTI, you really want something like ESP 0W30. Rule is “as thin as possible, as thick as necessary.”
Can you run Mobil 1 0W40? Absolutely. But ESP 0W30 and 0W40 FS are same price in Wal Mart.
Mobil 1 0W40 FS is full SAPS oil. It will have higher ZDDP (not too much. ESP 0W30 has very stout package) HTHS will be around 3.7. I used it on track running it to 302f in my BMW, still doing 5k OCI. Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W40 is GTL based, runs very clean, and because of GTL, tends to have higher HTHS from similar KV100. Some VOA has Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W40 at 12.79cst which is almost 30 grade (40 starts at 12.5cst). But HTHS is between 3.8 and 3.9. That HTHS usually means KV100 close to 14 in other, good oils.
So, you have problem choosing between some great oils. You won’t make mistake. But on track, I would stick between Mobil 1 0W40 and Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W40 if going off the shelf oils.
If going boutique, that is different conversation.
