I have a 92 F350 7.3 l diesel and am currently running Delvac 1300 in it. I would like to run a synthetic but the price and availability of diesel synthetics is a problem. I can get Mobil 1 15W-50 pretty cheap (Walmart) but it is not a diesel rated oil or is it? Are there really any differences in the car Mobil 1 and Delvac 1 other than the truck version cost a lot more. Also could I just put a couple of quarts of Mobil 1 15W-50 in with the Delvac 1300 to get some better wear properties? My truck holds 10 quarts of oil.

The Rotella T Synthetic is available but since it is not a real synthetic is it better than regular grade mineral oil that is half the price?

Most Walmarts now carry Mobil 1 5W-40 Truck & SUV (yellow cap). This is diesel approved and is the same blend as Delvac 1.

The Delvac 1300 is hard to beat, what are you hoping to gain with a synthetic? Any truck dealer should have a comparable syn oil also your Cat or John Deere dealer should be able to help too.

FYI the 13OO is a premium oil and a good candidate for drain extensions.

Stinky

Oh yeah, the diesel oils have additives made to disperse soot (a big problem) and additives to neutralize acids better than gas oils.

M-I is an excellent oil for gas engines but wouldnt put that in diesel, your Delvac Super is rated way higher at CI-4, will provide much enhanced protection for diesel engine.

Delvac-I is totally different from M-I, Delvac-I has far superior diesel optimized additive package compared to M-I but is costly so unless you are doing some extreme work, Delvac Super and Chevron Delo 400 should do the job real good. By the way Chevron Delo 400 supreme is also an equivalent alternative to Delvac-I.

The phrase "diesel synthetics" means what?

The most current 4 cycle diesel API Service Category is CI-4.

Mobil's Delvac 1 and their SUV 5W-40 meet it. The SUV is the same product as the Delvac 1.

The CI-4 standard involves EGR equipped engines, which yours is not.

http://api-ep.api.org/filelibrary/API_MotorOilGuide_2004.pdf

The 15W-50 meets the CF Service Category, "Introduced in 1994. For off-road, indirect injected and other diesel engines including those using fuel with over 0.5% weight sulfur. Can be used in place of CD oils."

You'll find all the Mobil 1 passenger car and motorcycle oils meet the CF Service Category.

The 15W-50 strikes me as a bit high in viscosity unless you're doing some heavy hauling.

The Delvac 1/SUV oil has a different additive package and slightly different blend stocks than the other Mobil 1 oils.

They are optimized for meeting the CI-4 requirements, including handling the increased soot load from the EGR system.

Perry the Decatur Wal-Mart carries Mobil 1 5W-40 T&S if none of the Huntsville Stores have it. BTW this oil is now slightly different from Delvac 1 as it has reduced Boron.

The Shell Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40 is a very good oil if you would consider a Group III synthetic.

Also the new "CI-4 Plus" rated Chevron Delo 400 15w40 now has Boron and Moly and seems to be a very well constructed Group II/II+ Oil.

The "CI-4 Plus" Delo 400 is good for 60,000 mi in some Heavy Diesels.

Any of these would be superior to Mobil 1 15W-50 in that application.

Personally unless I was going for maximum extended drain intervals with UOA or intended to start the vehicle below 20&#176F I would buy the Delo 400 15w40 and save some money.

Thanks for all the good inputs. I looked at the local Walmart here in Huntsville,AL on North Parkway and did not find the truck and SUV blend Mobil 1. I have looked at other Walmarts also. Maybe I will get to the Decatur Walmart one of these days. I am after better wear properties than standard mineral based oils. Maybe it is not necessary. I was planning on running the Delvac 1300 for 5000 miles and have Blackstone do an oil analysis to see where I am. I just bought the truck this summer and it has 170,000 miles on it so I figure synthetic may help it last a little longer. So far the truck seems to run well and really does not act like it has that many miles on it. Someone took care of it. I run Mobil 1 15W-50 in my Turbo Eclipse and the 10w30 variety in my other vehicles. I also run them for about 10,000 miles between oil changes. The Eclipse maybe around 6000 miles. One advantage to the Synthetic would be longer drain intervals but since this is not my main vehicle that may not be a big factor.

Perry,
Stick with the CI-4 or CI-4Plus engine oils. You'll want 15w40 or 5W-40 synthetic. A conventional oil, Chevron Delo 400, Mobil Delvac 1300s, Pennz Long Life, Valvoline Blue, will likely be good for 5000-6000 miles or more, depending on your driving conditions and the engine condition. Analysis will tell. The Mobil 5W-40 oils, Shell Rotella syn 5W-40, Schaeffer's 15w40 premium syn blend, or Valvoline blue syn will all give more miles on the oil, and very slightly less wear. Even on conventional oil that engine will be running when the truck is falling apart.

Automatic transmission? Do clean the transmission and power steering with Auto-Rx, then completely flush and refill with synthetic ATF.
