I forgot to add that I did change the Transmission fluid and trans filter. Again due to not knowing the previous maintenance. Also did all 3 motor mounts, it needed them.

Put an MSD super coil on it! You`ll thank yourself for it.

I changed the oil every 3,000 miles religiously! Usually Valvoline & Fram OCOD. HA!

I had an '84 Turismo 2.2L with >190K/17 yrs old
2 head gaskets. I used lot's of Havoline/FRAM combo in that car. The HG's aren't the worst thing about these cars.

Ranger99, you'll do fine with the Acclaim. The 2.5L is a better version of the 2.2 and probably better than the Mitsu 3.0 V6(oil burner) that was optional in those Acclaim/Spirit/LeBaron triplets!

In the early 1990's, I got my licence, and drove every day for about 6 months, my folks baby-blue 1985 Reliant sedan.

It was a good, solid car, and besides a bit of trouble starting in the cold, and some rust holes, it was a good car.

I SHOULD have bought it off my folks (cheap) for my first car when they bought their 1994 Tempo, but I didn't...for various reasons. Would have saved me a TON of money over the 1985 Skyhawk I ended up buying!

Took my driving test in a red '84 Dodge Aries 2.2.. That car was my first oil change too(QS in the circular white bottles) Had loads of fun driving that car with my friends and getting killer gas mileage.

That transmission is not the problematic 4-speed with OD. The three speed auto was bullet proof IMO. I had a 90 Acclaim 2.5 I plut over 150K on and a Sundance 2.5 with 150K+ showing on the ODO (and the speedo/odo didn't work most of the time). They both had the three speed auto and only one trans fluid/filter change in their lives (Back in the MOPAR 7176 transmission fluid days). Both cars were pretty underpowered, but got mid 20MPG all day and sniffed at 30 on the highway when driven slow. One trip to Florida the Acclaim got 32 with the cruise set at 55mph. GREAT cars, congrats- it will serve you very well. The only issues I had was the Hall effect sensor on the Acclaim and the power steering pump on the Sundance. Changed valve cover gaskets on each once, new shocks/struts. Other than that just tune-ups and fluid changes.

the most recent figures i could adjust for inflation to were for 2011,
but they only put $5000(1985 US Dollars),as having equivalent buying power as $10,407.36(2011 US Dollars)

i challenge you to find a NEW car, on sale in the US today for $10 grand...

Great cars. I am still driving a 92 Spirit (2.5 w/3spd auto. Sounds like you have done the right things.I addition to head gaskets, check out the rear spring perches, they tend to rot out in the middle, then ker-plunk. Smear grease all over them.Change oil 4-5k and you will be fine.
