Going over car I want to flush the coolant system and do not have the manual. Problem is coolant looks very rusty and cannot tell what is proper coolant to use. Car was manufactured in September of 2002. It looks like it may have the old green coolant in it but cannot tell due to the condition. Any knowledge on what is the proper coolant would be appreciated. Thanks

Ford made the switch away from old green on July 15th 2002 to Ford yellow for 2003 model year. That doesn't necessarily stop any later owner from putting in whatever they wanted. The rusty look in your coolant could be the result of both being too old or having some various coolants mixed together. If it was one owner, or serviced by Ford, you can probably figure it had the yellow coolant in it most of its life.
If in doubt, do a complete system drain to clear distilled water. It's the only way to be sure. They you can go to the yellow G05 formula which is probably similar to what your car had when new any ways.

That's what I was thinking also. I have two gallon jugs of the G05 coolant and will be flushing and adding that. Just wanted to be safe. Thanks for the chart.

It's an iron block engine. I'm willing to bet it's the original coolant and full of crud from 16 years of engine corrosion.

Coolant could be original. Going to flush with the motorcraft flush and install 50/50 distilled water and Zerex G05.

Here's a recent pic of my Y2K GT automatic. I use the Prestone all makes antifreeze in mine. I've drained and filled twice during the past 2 years. The second time I drained it I had to replace the leaking oil filter housing gasket (leaking oil) and the coolant runs through it so I lost all the coolant. These cars are very reliable/durable and with proper maintenance you can get 300K miles out of them.

Here's another pic. FWIW I've seen these engines get beaten on regularly and still go over 200K miles.
There are block drains on that engine. Driver's side next to the rear core plug, should be one on the passenger side as well.

Use distilled water, the minerals in city water interact with the plastic components, I have replace many intake manifolds because of this.
