Noticed this also when I changed the oil @ filters on my cars a week ago. I bought an extra one and cut it open and it was identical to the old white Napa Gold or Wix filters. Don't Worry.

Great..I hate white oil filters...sure it's shallow and the inside is what counts but a black filter will look just as cool as the red Baldwin on my black Jeeps block...whooohooo..I use either the Napa gold or the Baldwin on my Jeeps
I just picked up a Napa Gold filter for my van today and they have changed the look of them. They are in a fancy box now, they are painted black instead of white, and the labeling is now on a sticker instead of painted on the can. It says they are still manufactured by Wix in Gastonia, NC. The endcap of an older vintage Napa Gold that I had on the shelf had an 18 stamped on it, but the new one doesn't. Anyone else see this yet. I hope they didn't change the internals or make them any cheaper. I guess the only way to find out is to cut one open.

I have had the "old" white filters come in the "new" boxs showing a black filter. I also have gotten the newer look filter in new box.

T Keith Great update again the Pure One & NAPA Gold both will serve you well in extended OCI.I hope!
After purchasing the new black filter I noticed a change on the box - it stated "advanced" filter media instead of glass-enhanced. I called WIX and they stated nothing was changed when they went to black. Something NAPA asked for to make it more marketable.
Black filters cool better because of the "black body radiation effect" Physics 100.
black filters also absorb more heat from the surrounding engine parts
i don't think it makes a bit of difference. one thing about black filters is that it is hard for me to write the date and mileage on them with a sharpie.

They're black 'cause that's the color NAPA wanted them painted, no other reason. Sharpies also come in silver and white.quote:
