Well shoot, that's a lot more Zn and P than I expected to see in an oil like this. Looks like it could almost make the SM qual. I'm confused. . . What's so special about this oil?

The plethora of euro oil specs it meets.

The real question is whether EM will know what your thinking when you use this oil

It looks to me to be marketing more than anything else.

BMW LL-04
Mercedes-Benz 229.51
Volkswagen 507

You'd be hard pressed to find tougher manufacturer's specs than these. The fact that it can protect at that level with 0.63% sulphated ash is pretty noteworthy IMO.

Plus, it meets ACEA A3 (needs thick oil) while also passing the engine test requirements of ACEA A5 (needs thin oil).

Seems pretty serious.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I don't see anything incorrect, but I'm still baffled by this product in several ways. Again, the bottle is a mismatch from the rest of the M1 product line, and it's also inconsistent with the color coding they use with the rest of the line (except the AFE oils, which this is definitely not). All of their 5w30s are blue coded, and the 10w30s are green. This is a 5w, with green color coding.

And it is obviously a niche product, now that I've read the comments, I see that. But that said, why is it totally absent from the main US Mobil oil site??? EM seems to take pride in its vast line of oils, why not brag on this stuff too???

As several posters have noted, this is probably an oil meant more for diesels than gassers. That's fine, but odd still in that the label says virtually zip about the product being for diesels. With the 5w-40 TDT, they proclaim the diesel orientation right in the name. But not with this oil. Another inconsistency.

Well, it is what it is, and I'm not privy to the marketing process inside EM. I imagine they've given what they're doing some thought. Thanks for the comments. More welcome if any.

These oils appear to have been originally intended to be used & sold at dealerships only in the US, with the 5w40 ESP FM available at MB and the 5w30 ESP at Jeep/Chrysler/Dodge dealers only...in the same way that Castrol SLX Professional is only really available at VW dealers in the US.

Oils are for diesel & gas in Europe, but gas recommendation has been pulled back by MB due to ethanol/water issue mentioned above.

See the above-linked thread to my experience with the ESP 5w40 FM...

Hello guys, I am using the "M1 esp formula" in my Ford Focus with 102000km, here in Italy is the most expensive this Mobil1 esp, but I buy in Germany where it costs less. M1 esp formula is 20% more viscous of 5w30 normal and is long life, fire point 254 ° C. Is good for gasoline engines and Turbo Diesel with filters Euro5.

Now that is a good question. Seems odd that we'd see it in stores before seeing it on their website.

There's nothing about these oils that makes them diesel-only. You can use them in gassers all day. They just won't last as long as the non-ESP oils if you're using gasoline with ethanol.

As has been noted, Mercedes 229.51 and BMW LL-04 are for both gas and diesel engines. Mercedes and BMW just don't want you to use those specs for gassers in countries where gasoline contains ethanol.

Minor update: both flavors of ESP are now showing up on the main US Exxon-Mobil site. The 5w-40 showed up first, followed a few days later by the 5w30. FWLIW.

Hear I was hopeing it would read my mind while I am at the store and tripple all of it's additives ont he spot before I plucked this little gem from the shelf! Oh well I guess that is the stuff of dreams!!!LOL

Not long ago, I was looking at this oil to use in a Ford Modular V8. It had no Ford Service Fill approval, so I emailed ExxonMobil to inquire about it. Have to say I was less than impressed by the response from their Middle East team in pathetic English. "This product does not suit your vehicle, contact your Ford dealer".

Kudos to Mobil for bringing this product to the U.S. market. No one else has anything available quite like this oil.
